Full Job Description Job Title:
Phlebotomist (Float) Job Description This phlebotomist position focuses on high-volume blood collection, specimen processing, and exceptional patient service in a busy patient service center and walk-in lab environment. The role primarily involves performing blood draws, processing and centrifuging specimens, and entering orders in the laboratory information system, while floating between locations from Newport Beach to Manhattan Beach. You will work with patients across the lifespan, including pediatric, adult, geriatric, and oncology populations, and will receive structured training in both phlebotomy workflows and front desk procedures. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and blood draws, completing up to 30 to 40 draws per day in a high-volume setting. Collect blood specimens safely and accurately from patients ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, including cancer patients, while providing compassionate care. Process specimens by centrifuging, splitting, and preparing samples according to established laboratory protocols. Enter and manage patient orders and specimen information in the Touch system and other medical record or data entry systems with a high level of accuracy. Handle front desk responsibilities after training, including patient check-in, order verification, and coordination of walk-in lab services. Deliver high-quality customer service to all patients, addressing questions and concerns professionally and courteously. Maintain strict adherence to safety, infection control, and quality standards during all blood collection and specimen handling procedures. Support a fast-paced patient service center that sees approximately 170 to 200 patients daily by working efficiently and prioritizing tasks appropriately. Float between assigned locations from Newport Beach to Manhattan Beach as needed, adapting to different site workflows and schedules. Participate in the structured training program, including completing approximately 25 observation collections and learning entering and processing procedures during a dedicated training week. Collaborate with other healthcare and laboratory staff to ensure timely, accurate, and complete specimen collection and processing. Document all procedures, collections, and patient interactions as required by laboratory and regulatory standards. Essential Skills Phlebotomy experience with proficiency in venipuncture and blood draw techniques. Phlebotomy certification (required). Experience or training in specimen processing, including centrifuging and splitting samples. Strong data entry skills with accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to use laboratory and medical record systems, including the Touch system or similar platforms. Demonstrated customer service skills in a patient-facing healthcare environment. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced setting and learn new procedures quickly. Comfort working with diverse patient populations, including pediatric, adult, geriatric, and oncology patients. Willingness and ability to float between locations from Newport Beach to Manhattan Beach. Availability to work 8-hour shifts within a time window between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on site hours. Additional Skills & Qualifications Completion of a phlebotomy externship or equivalent hands-on clinical training. Hospital experience or previous work in a high-volume clinical or laboratory setting. Experience working with geriatric patients. Experience in patient care and medical record documentation. Comfort performing front desk and administrative duties in addition to clinical responsibilities. Ability to adapt quickly to different locations, teams, and workflows. Strong communication skills and a professional, patient-centered demeanor. Willingness to attend a full-time, 40-hour training week, regardless of part-time status, to learn entering and processing procedures at designated training locations. Work Environment This role is based out of a hub in Fountain Valley and functions as a float position, traveling to multiple patient service centers and walk-in labs between Manhattan Beach and Newport Beach. You will work 8-hour shifts, with start and end times varying between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. depending on the specific location's operating hours. The primary work setting is a busy patient service center and walk-in laboratory that sees approximately 170 to 200 patients per day, including pediatric, adult, geriatric, and cancer patients. The environment is fast paced and highly patient-focused, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, safety, and customer service. You will regularly use centrifuges, laboratory processing equipment, and electronic systems such as the Touch system and medical record platforms. Training includes a structured program with about 25 observation collections and a dedicated week of full-time instruction on entering and processing procedures, which may take place at training locations in Wildomar, Tustin, or Los Angeles. Hotel accommodations may be provided if required during this training week. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Fountain Valley, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.11 - $23.11/hr.
