Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood collection procedures for patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and neonatal populations. The position requires proficiency in venipuncture and capillary techniques, including difficult draws in a busy medical office building setting. The Phlebotomist upholds rigorous safety and compliance standards, supports training and orientation of patient service technicians, and delivers excellent customer service in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Responsibilities Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Conduct pediatric and neonatal blood draws, including challenging and difficult venipuncture cases in a high-volume medical office building environment. Ensure all specimen collections follow established safety, infection control, and regulatory compliance standards. Communicate clearly with patients and families to explain procedures, provide reassurance, and deliver a positive patient experience. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety requirements and effectively communicate their importance to colleagues. Provide orientation and on-the-job training to patient service technicians, sharing best practices and reinforcing quality standards. Utilize laboratory information systems and related computer applications accurately to register patients, label specimens, and document collections. Maintain a high level of productivity by meeting expected draw volumes in both outpatient and inpatient settings within an 8-hour shift. Travel between multiple medical office building laboratories within South Orange County as needed to support coverage and patient volume. Demonstrate flexibility in working various shifts and hours between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., including weekends as required. Maintain excellent attendance, professionalism, and behavior in all interactions with patients, families, and staff. Collaborate with the lab supervisor, team lead, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient operations and high-quality patient care. Essential Skills Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups. Demonstrated experience with pediatric and neonatal blood draws on actual patients, beyond classroom or training-only experience. At least six months of phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience. Ability to perform high-volume outpatient draws, typically 45-55 patients within an 8-hour shift. Ability to perform inpatient hospital draws, typically 20-30 patients within an 8-hour shift. Strong understanding of safety, infection control, and regulatory compliance in a laboratory and clinical setting. High level of computer literacy, including experience with a laboratory information system (such as Cerner or similar). Excellent customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with patients and families. Reliable attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct. Flexibility to work varying shifts and hours between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Willingness and ability to travel between multiple medical office building laboratory sites in South Orange County. Current CPT I license. High school diploma or equivalent. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in a hospital setting is highly desirable. Experience in outpatient laboratory environments (such as large reference labs) with high draw volumes is strongly preferred. Experience in inpatient hospital environments with moderate to high draw volumes is an advantage. Experience working with pediatric patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Strong ability to manage time and workflow effectively in a high-volume clinical environment. Ability to work collaboratively within a team under the supervision of a lab supervisor and team lead. Commitment to patient-centered care and a focus on quality and safety in every interaction. Work Environment The role is based in a high-volume clinical setting, primarily within medical office buildings and outpatient clinics, with the potential to transition to a main hospital laboratory environment. Phlebotomists work under the supervision of a lab supervisor and team lead and regularly interact with pediatric, neonatal, and adult patient populations. The schedule requires availability between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. any day of the week, with flexibility to cover various shifts as needed. The position involves traveling between multiple medical office building laboratory locations throughout South Orange County. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, safety, and efficiency. Staff use laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms, along with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Irvine, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
