Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood collections for patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and neonatal draws in both outpatient medical office buildings and a hospital laboratory setting. The position requires demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and capillary techniques, a solid understanding of compliance and safety standards, and the ability to support and train other patient service technicians while delivering compassionate, efficient patient care in a high-volume environment. Responsibilities Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients across all age groups, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Carry out pediatric and neonatal blood collections, including difficult draws, in a calm, safe, and patient-centered manner. Manage high-volume phlebotomy workflows in outpatient medical office building clinics, drawing approximately 45-55 patients within an 8-hour shift in outpatient settings when required. Support inpatient phlebotomy needs in the hospital environment, drawing approximately 20-30 patients within an 8-hour shift in inpatient settings when required. Work effectively with pediatric patients under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead, following all clinical and safety protocols. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations and consistently apply these standards in all phlebotomy procedures. Clearly communicate the importance of compliance, safety, and quality standards to colleagues and contribute to a culture of safe laboratory practice. Provide orientation and on-the-job training to patient service technicians and other staff as needed, sharing best practices for blood collection and patient care. Utilize laboratory information systems and related computer applications to register patients, label specimens, track orders, and document procedures accurately. Deliver excellent customer service by interacting professionally with patients, families, and clinical staff, addressing questions, and easing patient concerns about blood draws. Maintain an excellent attendance record and demonstrate reliable, professional behavior in all work settings. Adapt to varying shift times between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on any day of the week, based on operational needs. Travel between multiple medical office building laboratories within the South Orange County area as assigned, ensuring consistent service levels across locations. Ensure all specimens are collected, labeled, stored, and transported according to established laboratory and regulatory standards. Collaborate closely with the lab supervisor, team lead, and other healthcare professionals to support efficient laboratory operations and high-quality patient care. Essential Skills Proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups. Demonstrated experience with pediatric and neonatal blood draws on actual patients, beyond classroom-only practice. Ability to perform difficult draws, including in high-acuity or challenging patient situations within medical office buildings and hospital settings. At least six months of phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience. Experience working with pediatric patients in clinical environments. Ability to manage high-volume outpatient workloads, drawing approximately 45-55 patients within an 8-hour shift. Ability to manage inpatient workloads, drawing approximately 20-30 patients within an 8-hour shift. Current CPT I license. High school diploma or equivalent. Computer proficiency with experience using a laboratory information system, such as Cerner or a similar platform. Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families. Reliable attendance and professional behavior in all work settings. Flexibility to work various shifts and hours between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., including weekends as needed. Willingness and ability to travel between multiple medical office building labs within the region. Well-developed venipuncture skills and phlebotomy knowledge that are already fully established, without the need for basic phlebotomy training. Additional Skills & Qualifications Hospital phlebotomy experience in an acute or sub-acute setting is strongly preferred. Experience in outpatient laboratory environments such as large reference laboratories is highly valued, especially with high daily draw volumes. Prior inpatient hospital experience is considered a plus and supports success in this role. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both outpatient clinic and main hospital laboratory settings. Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, team leads, and multidisciplinary clinical teams. Commitment to patient-centered care and alignment with a culture that emphasizes quality and safety. Work Environment The role is based in a high-volume clinical environment that includes multiple medical office building laboratories and a main hospital laboratory in South Orange County. Phlebotomists primarily work in medical office buildings and draw stations, providing outpatient services in busy clinic settings, and may transition to the main hospital lab upon permanent placement. The workday can fall anywhere between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., any day of the week, requiring flexibility with shifts and scheduling. The position involves frequent travel between several draw stations and clinic locations within the region, supporting a consistent standard of care across all sites. The environment is fast paced and patient focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, and high-quality specimen collection. Standard clinical and laboratory equipment is used, including venipuncture supplies and laboratory information systems such as Cerner or similar platforms. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Irvine, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
