ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Phlebotomists are responsible for all tasks related to drawing blood for medical procedures. This includes preparing the patient for the procedure by interviewing them briefly, initiating the venipuncture (needle-drawing) or capillary (finger-prick) puncture technique to draw blood, and cleaning and sealing the area afterwards. They must have all necessary materials (such as tourniquets, needles, bandages, and alcohol) sterile and ready for the patient. Once a sample is taken, phlebotomists are responsible for proper labeling and storage, as well as any additional routing or processing that may be needed. They must follow all health, safety, and infection-control guidelines while performing their work.
DUTIES:
Demonstrates proper patient identification. Provide instruction to patients on how to provide urine, oral and blood (phlebotomist only) specimens. Performs specimen collection, including venipuncture, capillary draws, urine collection, and culture receipt. Accessions specimens. Proper labeling of specimens, completion of requisitions and all other needed information. Prepare specimens and requisition forms, including packaging of the specimens into biohazard bags for shipping. Responsible for ensuring samples are shipped to lab in the appropriate amount of time and supporting records/manifests are maintained. Ensuring the accurate completion of requisitions forms and assisting with all missing information requests when needed. Confirming reports are generated by laboratory for specimens processed and facilitating inquiries to laboratory. Thorough knowledge of all processes and will act as liaison between clinic and laboratory. Demonstrates proper infection control. Presents patient with an ABN and explains why the test is non-covered. Performs specimen collection, including venipuncture, capillary draws, urine collection, and culture receipt. Accessions specimens. Demonstrates proper infection control. Answers lab phones and responds to questions. Demonstrates ability to recognize emergent conditions and reacts appropriately. Provides services in a professional and patient centered manner. Actively participates in lab process improvement project.
REQUIRED SKILLS OR LICENSES
3-5 years of employment as a Phlebotomist. Certification from nationally recognized agency, required.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician:
CPT (ACA) Graduate from a nationally accredited Medical Assistant program such as
AAMA, AMT
(RMA), or NCQT. Experience working with geriatric patients preferred. Strong customer service skills required. High School Diploma or GED. Basic computer skills required. EMR system experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Knowledge of Medical products, services, standards, policies and procedures. Skill in operating phones, personal computer, software and other IT systems. Skill in oral communication (English required; spanish preferred). Ability to communicate and work with doctors, patients and others in a professional and courteous manner. American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. BLS Recertification is required every two years.
