Job Description

Job Title:
Phlebotomist - Fayetteville Job Description The Phlebotomist I performs high-volume blood collection and specimen processing for patients of all ages, ensuring accurate labeling, handling, and preparation of samples for testing. This role combines hands-on phlebotomy with data entry, administrative support, and consistent delivery of excellent customer service in a busy outpatient laboratory setting. Responsibilities Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric. Collect and properly label specimens for routine laboratory tests, including CBC, CMP, PT, and other ordered studies, ensuring accuracy and compliance with established procedures. Collect specimens for specialized testing such as drug screens, paternity tests, and alcohol tests following strict chain-of-custody and documentation requirements. Prepare all collected specimens for testing and analysis, including proper storage, centrifugation, and timely delivery to the appropriate testing areas. Maintain accurate patient and specimen information logs, ensuring all records are complete, legible, and up to date. Perform data entry of patient and specimen information in an accurate and timely manner using laboratory and patient information systems. Record maintenance and quality control data as required and participate in decontamination and cleaning procedures to maintain a safe and sanitary work area. Follow the correct order of draw and tube selection based on test requirements, including blood culture bottles, light blue, red, gold/tiger top, green, light green, lavender/purple, pink, gray, and royal blue tubes. Verify patient identity, explain procedures, and provide superior customer service to all patients, ensuring a professional, courteous, and reassuring experience. Handle a high daily volume of blood draws, typically 25 or more patients per day, while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and patient comfort. Perform administrative and clerical duties as necessary, such as filing, answering phones, and assisting with front-office tasks related to specimen collection. Work independently and as part of a team, communicating effectively with colleagues and other healthcare professionals to support smooth laboratory operations. Adhere to all safety, infection control, and confidentiality policies and procedures. Essential Skills At least 2 years of recent experience as a phlebotomist, including high-volume blood draw experience (25+ patient draws per day). Proficiency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection techniques for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. High school diploma or GED (high school diploma or equivalent). Strong knowledge of specimen collection, labeling, handling, and storage according to established laboratory procedures. Ability to accurately identify and use the correct tubes for specific tests, including CBC (lavender), CMP (gold top), and PT (light blue). Understanding of the correct order of draw and tube purposes, including blood culture bottles, light blue (sodium citrate), red (serum), gold/tiger top (SST), green (heparin), light green (PST), lavender/purple (EDTA), pink (EDTA), gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate), and royal blue (trace elements). Proven track record of providing exceptional customer service in a patient-facing role. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively in a team environment. Comfort working under minimal supervision while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail. Basic computer skills and accuracy in data entry for patient and specimen information. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in an outpatient patient service center or similar clinical laboratory setting. Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively in a high-volume environment while maintaining quality and patient focus. Flexibility to work overtime as needed to support patient and operational needs. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and healthcare staff. Ability to remain calm, courteous, and efficient when working with anxious or difficult patients. Familiarity with administrative and clerical tasks related to laboratory operations, such as maintaining logs and documentation. Work Environment This position is based in a patient service center in Fayetteville, GA, operating Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The schedule may include overtime and rotating time off during the week to maintain a 40-hour workweek. The environment is a busy clinical laboratory and outpatient collection site with a steady flow of patients and a high volume of daily blood draws. The role requires standing for extended periods, frequent patient interaction, and adherence to standard clinical attire and safety protocols. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fayetteville, GA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.75/hr.
