Job Description
Job Summary The Phlebotomist Trainee is an entry-level position designed to provide hands-on training in specimen collection and patient interaction. Under close supervision, you will learn how to collect blood and other specimens safely and accurately while following established protocols. This role is ideal for individuals starting a healthcare career and interested in developing skills in patient care and laboratory services.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required Maryland resident Individuals eligible for the Maryland Service Year Program (generally ages 18-24)Experience:
No prior phlebotomy experience requiredLicensure/Certification:
Current BLS (CPR) certification required or ability to obtain upon hireSkills & Abilities:
Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision Strong communication and customer service skills Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Comfort interacting with patients in a clinical setting Basic computer skills No prior phlebotomy experience required Current BLS (CPR) certification required or ability to obtain upon hire Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision Strong communication and customer service skills Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Comfort interacting with patients in a clinical setting Basic computer skills What You'll Do Observe and assist experienced phlebotomists with specimen collection Learn proper techniques for venipuncture and fingersticks Verify patient identity using established safety protocols Label, process, and transport specimens under supervision Maintain supplies and organize work areas Communicate with patients to provide reassurance and instructions Follow all infection control, safety, and regulatory guidelines Assist with basic documentation and workflow tasks What the Job is Really Like This is a learning-focused role , where you will gradually build skills under supervision before working independently You'll interact directly with patients, including those who may be nervous, in pain, or difficult to draw The role requires precision and attention to detail —even small mistakes can affect patient safety You'll be on your feet most of the day, moving between patients and work areas The environment can be fast-paced , especially in inpatient settings where timing is critical You'll be exposed to a variety of situations, from routine lab draws to urgent hospital needs You must be comfortable working in a clinical environment with blood and bodily fluids Progression in this role depends on your ability to learn quickly, follow procedures, and build confidence Work Environment & Demands Hospital, outpatient, or inpatient settings with direct patient interaction Frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout the shift (as shown in physical demands on page 3) Exposure to blood and bodily fluids, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols Requires strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures Fast-paced, team-oriented environment with changing priorities What Success Looks Like You demonstrate consistent improvement in specimen collection skills Patient identification and safety protocols are followed correctly every time You build confidence in patient interaction and communication You complete tasks accurately under supervision You show reliability, professionalism, and willingness to learn You progress toward independent practice as a Phlebotomist Caring for Our Team We offer a comprehensive benefits package to support our employees' well-being and professional growth.
