Phlebotomist I - Waldorf Job Description This Phlebotomist I position focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and handling while supporting overall laboratory workflow. The role involves performing blood draws and other specimen collections, accurately labeling and processing samples, maintaining equipment and records, and contributing to troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement within the laboratory or collection site. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Label specimen tubes accurately and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to maintain correct patient and test identification. Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following established laboratory standards. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure complete accuracy before processing. Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport to ensure sample integrity during transit. Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the correct storage locations according to laboratory procedures. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Update patient information and related records accurately in the system or on forms as needed. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed. Participate in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations for process improvements. Assist with training and support of colleagues by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Proficiency in collecting, labeling, and storing blood and other specimens according to established procedures. Ability to centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens in accordance with specific test requirements. Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts. Skill in packaging specimens for transport and ensuring proper storage conditions, including adherence to required temperatures. Capability to record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in a laboratory or collection setting. Ability to clearly and courteously explain specimen collection procedures to patients. Competence in updating patient information accurately and maintaining accurate documentation. Ability to fully understand and follow physicians' orders for laboratory testing. General troubleshooting skills related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience contributing to workflow improvement by making practical recommendations. Experience assisting with or providing training to other staff members on phlebotomy techniques and procedures. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare professionals. Organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and tasks while maintaining accuracy and compliance with procedures. Work Environment The role is based in a clinical or laboratory setting where phlebotomy and specimen processing are performed according to established procedures. The position involves frequent use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, specimen tubes, and centrifuges, as well as computer systems or requisition forms for test ordering and labeling. The environment requires strict adherence to safety and decontamination practices, careful handling and storage of specimens at appropriate temperatures, and consistent attention to detail in a structured, process-driven workflow. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Waldorf, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.
