Phlebotomist Job Description This role focuses on performing high-volume blood draws in an outpatient setting, accurately processing and packaging specimens, and coordinating logistics to ensure timely delivery to the testing laboratory. The phlebotomist works closely with clinic staff to organize daily schedules, maintain specimen integrity, and support a smooth and professional patient experience. Responsibilities Perform blood draws (venipuncture) approximately 25-30 times per day, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure. Collect blood specimens accurately, following proper order of draw and using BD Vacutainer tube colors correctly for multiple tube collections. Process specimens promptly after collection, including proper labeling, handling, and preparation for transport. Package blood samples according to established protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transportation. Coordinate daily with clinic staff to organize and schedule patient blood draws. Arrange and schedule pick-ups and shipping of collected samples to the designated medical testing site. Follow all phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing procedures to meet quality and compliance standards. Maintain accurate documentation and records related to specimen collection, processing, and shipment. Support a positive patient experience by communicating clearly, answering basic questions, and demonstrating a professional and courteous demeanor. Collaborate with onsite and offsite team members to ensure efficient workflow and coverage across locations. Essential Skills At least 6 months of experience as a Phlebotomist or Medical Assistant with hands-on responsibility for drawing, processing, and packaging blood samples. Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification or completion of a related certificate program. Completion of at least 200 solo blood draws, demonstrating confidence and proficiency in venipuncture. Strong venipuncture skills, including performing consistent, accurate blood draws in an outpatient setting. Thorough knowledge of the order of draw and BD Vacutainer tube color sequence for multiple tube collections. Proficiency in specimen collection and specimen processing, including labeling, handling, and preparation for transport. Ability to communicate effectively with clinic staff and other team members to coordinate schedules and logistics. High attention to detail and adherence to established phlebotomy and laboratory procedures. High school diploma or equivalent education. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in outpatient clinics or similar healthcare environments. Comfort working both in stationary roles and in float positions across multiple locations. Strong organizational skills to manage daily patient volumes and sample logistics. Reliability and commitment to consistent attendance, particularly during the first 90 days of employment. Ability to work both independently and as part of small teams, adapting to varying team sizes at different sites. Professionalism and a patient-focused mindset, with the ability to provide a calm and reassuring presence during blood draws. Work Environment This position is based in an outpatient setting with standard hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at or associated with a clinic located on Avis Drive in Michigan. The role offers both stationary and float opportunities, allowing you to work at a primary site as well as support additional offsite locations as needed. On the main site, you will typically work alongside a team of approximately 15 colleagues, while offsite locations may have anywhere from 0 to 3 team members present, requiring comfort working independently or in small groups. Team members wear navy blue scrubs as the standard dress code. The environment emphasizes hands-on phlebotomy experience, steady patient volume, and close collaboration with clinic staff and laboratory partners, providing strong exposure to specimen collection, processing, and logistics. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ann Arbor, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.
