Medical Assistant / Clinical Support Staff (Phlebotomist) Job Description This full-time temporary Medical Assistant / Clinical Support Staff position supports a busy yet well-organized internal medicine and family practice. The role focuses on clinical support during patient visits, specimen collection and processing, and consistent adherence to clinical protocols. You will work with a diverse outpatient population, including adults and individuals with a history of substance use disorder, in a supportive, team-oriented environment. Responsibilities Assist providers during patient visits in an internal medicine and family practice setting, ensuring smooth patient flow and efficient rooming. Collect and process urine samples, following standard test panels and established protocols. Perform or assist with blood draws, using straight needle techniques when appropriate, with onsite phlebotomy support available. Prepare laboratory specimens accurately, including correct tube selection, labeling, and handling to maintain specimen integrity. Follow all clinical protocols and office procedures without skipping steps, ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards. Maintain meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of lab handling and specimen preparation. Provide professional, compassionate, and nonjudgmental care to a diverse patient population, including individuals with a history of substance use disorder. Demonstrate strong customer service skills by communicating clearly with patients, answering basic questions, and helping them feel comfortable during procedures. Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff in a team-oriented environment, supporting consistent workflows and practice operations. Show reliability and dependability in attendance and performance, recognizing the importance of this role in providing temporary coverage. Essential Skills Hands-on experience with phlebotomy and blood draws, including straight needle techniques. Ability to collect and process urine samples and other specimens according to established protocols. Strong attention to detail in lab handling, specimen preparation, and tube selection. Comfort working in a busy, fast-paced outpatient internal medicine or family practice environment. Professional, compassionate, and nonjudgmental approach to patient care, including patients with a history of substance use disorder. Commitment to following protocols and procedures precisely, without skipping steps. Reliable and dependable work habits, especially important for temporary coverage. Effective customer service and communication skills when interacting with patients and staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in internal medicine, family practice, or primary care settings. Experience working with geriatric patients and a broad adult patient population. Experience in healthcare or clinical support roles involving phlebotomy and specimen collection. Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment with clear workflows and expectations. Comfort working in a practice that serves a unique and diverse community, including patients receiving methadone treatment. Detail-oriented mindset and a preference for following established processes and guidelines. Work Environment This is a full-time, temporary coverage role in a smaller outpatient internal medicine and family practice office, operating Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The practice maintains a steady but manageable patient volume, typically averaging 20-45 patients per day, with a pace that is consistently active without being overwhelming. Onsite phlebotomy services and clear clinical workflows support efficient daily operations. The office is located next to a methadone clinic and serves a unique, diverse community, including patients with complex medical and social needs. The team is described as supportive and friendly, with a strong emphasis on professionalism, adherence to protocol, and high-quality patient care in a close-knit, collaborative environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elizabeth City, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
