Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting efficient laboratory workflow in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The phlebotomist collects, processes, and prepares specimens according to established procedures, ensures accurate documentation, and provides clear, courteous explanations to patients about collection procedures. The position also supports troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement recommendations within the department. Responsibilities Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including straight needles and butterfly needles, in a safe and efficient manner. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and processing. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders. Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. Process specimens by centrifuging and preparing them for analysis or transport as required. Package specimens for transport and ensure they are placed in appropriate collection containers or tubes. Store specimen samples at required temperatures and follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and transport. Fully understand and follow physicians' orders related to laboratory tests and specimen collection. Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain detailed records of specimen handling. Record maintenance data and assist with decontamination procedures in accordance with established guidelines. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety protocols. Attend annual departmental trainings and stay current with procedural updates and regulatory requirements. Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results as needed to support patient care and clinical staff. Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and processing and make workflow recommendations to improve efficiency. Provide patient care support across various patient populations, including pediatric, geriatric, obstetric, and gynecologic settings, as needed. Use EPIC or similar electronic systems to pull orders and perform light specimen processing in alignment with daily workflow. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting; 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in blood draws, venipuncture, and the use of straight and butterfly needles. Experience with specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens. Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts. Strong patient care skills, including clear and courteous communication when explaining procedures. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and reporting tasks. Ability to understand and follow physicians' orders and laboratory protocols. Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety procedures. High School Diploma or
GED. 0-2
years of relevant experience, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience providing phlebotomy services in medical settings such as pediatric, geriatric, obstetric, and gynecologic care environments. Familiarity with EPIC or similar electronic health record systems for retrieving orders and documenting patient information. Comfort working in a hospital or high-volume laboratory setting with multiple competing priorities. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and specimen handling. Ability to participate in troubleshooting and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency. Willingness to attend ongoing departmental trainings and adapt to updated procedures and regulations. Work Environment The position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment focused on drawing blood and processing specimens. The phlebotomist works with a variety of patient populations and performs frequent venipunctures and specimen collections throughout the day. Daily tasks include pulling orders from EPIC or similar systems, performing light specimen processing, and preparing specimens for transport while maintaining appropriate storage temperatures and conditions. The role requires consistent adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, decontamination procedures, and safety protocols. Work is collaborative, with regular interaction with clinical staff, patients, and laboratory personnel, and may include coverage for team members on leave or open positions at the site. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Matthews, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
