Job Title:
Phlebotomist I Job Description This role provides hands-on phlebotomy support in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, focusing on accurate specimen collection, processing, and documentation. The Phlebotomist I assists with daily workflow, troubleshooting, and training while ensuring that all specimens are collected, handled, and stored according to established procedures and regulatory standards. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy. Label specimens accurately and completely, ensuring that patient information and test orders are correctly recorded. Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity. Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes according to protocol. Follow specific procedures for specimen handling and transport to preserve the integrity and viability of samples. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection. Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support general laboratory upkeep as assigned. Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and accuracy in specimen handling. Attend required annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations related to safety, biohazard handling, and laboratory operations. Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, following appropriate procedures. Essential Skills Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. Minimum of 1 year of experience performing venipunctures, preferably in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Experience with specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport. Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify information. Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in test requisitions, labeling, and documentation. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. High school diploma or
GED. 0-2
years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role, with at least 6 months of hands-on venipuncture experience. Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations relevant to laboratory safety and specimen handling. Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients and provide courteous, professional service. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment. Comfort handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians' orders related to laboratory testing. Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel. Capability to assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and suggesting process improvements. Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual departmental education. Reliable, punctual, and able to adhere to a set schedule that includes early morning hours and weekend shifts. Work Environment This position is based in a clinical or laboratory facility in Bridgewater, NJ. The role involves working in a fast-paced environment where you handle blood and other biological specimens, operate equipment such as centrifuges, and use computers and standard office software for documentation. You will work a part-time schedule on Friday, Saturday, and Monday from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The position is non-float, so you will primarily remain at the assigned location. The work setting follows strict safety, biohazard, and regulatory standards, including compliance with OSHA and DEP guidelines. You can expect a professional clinical dress code appropriate for a laboratory or healthcare environment, with adherence to all safety and infection-control requirements. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Bridgewater, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
