Position Summary Phlebotomists collect blood specimens from outpatients while adhering to established protocols to ensure proper sample collection and patient safety. They transport blood specimens to laboratory departments, in accordance with proper procedures for such transport and handling. In addition, they conduct in-service education programs relating to theories and techniques of phlebotomy, and perform related clerical work. Duties of a Phlebotomists may include the following but are not limited to: Collects blood specimens from patients through the performance of venipuncture, capillary puncture techniques and/or making an incision on the patient's arm. Provides phlebotomy services to patients in various outpatient, following the orders of the patient's physician. Enters data concerning blood specimens into a computer database; maintains appointment schedules and logs patients seen and tests obtained; records results of patients tests and files them appropriately; keeps work-related statistics and performs related clerical duties. Supervises, teaches and provides support to medical technology students in both theories and techniques of phlebotomy by designing and implementing formal and informal programs of instruction ensuring that all established protocols and procedures for proper sample collection and patient safety are adhered to.Attends and/or presents related hospital in-service programs.
