Job Title:
Phlebotomist (Westchester) Job Description This phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen preparation while ensuring patients feel comfortable and informed throughout the process. You will work with a wide range of patients, including pediatrics, and play a key role in maintaining accurate specimen handling and documentation to support high-quality patient care. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of skill and care. Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to help them feel at ease. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accurate labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing of specimens as required by test orders. Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the prescription or script to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and shipment. Store specimen samples at the required temperatures, place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow all procedures necessary to preserve specimen quality. Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and decontamination procedures. Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment as required for safe specimen collection and handling. Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and update patient information accurately in relevant systems or logs. Attend annual department trainings to stay current with procedures, regulations, and best practices. Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and accurate manner. Work with pediatric patients and adapt phlebotomy techniques to meet their specific needs. Essential Skills 2-3 years of experience performing blood draws in a clinical or laboratory setting. Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles. Experience collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens according to established procedures. Ability to work with pediatric patients and perform blood draws in a calm and reassuring manner. Strong administrative skills and attention to detail for accurate labeling, documentation, and verification of test requisitions. Ability to clearly explain blood draw and specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to fully understand and interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing. Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards. Comfort with handling multiple specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. Strong communication skills for answering phone calls and relaying laboratory information accurately. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in environments that require frequent specimen processing and handling. Familiarity with pediatric phlebotomy and techniques tailored to children. Comfort with in-state travel and working in more than one site as needed. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple patients and specimen workflows. Ability to maintain a professional and reassuring demeanor with a wide range of patients. Spanish language skills are preferred for both openings. Work Environment This role is based in Westchester County with two site options. The first opening is in Yonkers with a schedule of Monday-Friday, 12:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m., plus every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The second opening is in Ossining with a schedule of Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., plus every Saturday from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The position is well-suited for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and in-state travel. You will work in a clinical or laboratory environment handling blood and other specimens, using standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, and centrifuges. The role requires adherence to safety protocols, OSHA and DEP regulations, and the use of appropriate attire and personal protective equipment at all times. There are no holiday or vacation shifts required as part of this position. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Yonkers, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
