Job Title:
Phlebotomist III Job Description The Phlebotomist III performs advanced phlebotomy procedures, including blood draws and specimen handling, while ensuring accurate labeling, documentation, and compliance with safety regulations. This role focuses on high-quality patient care, clear communication, and precise execution of laboratory protocols to maintain specimen integrity and support accurate diagnostic testing. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, efficient, and professional manner. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, including urine and fecal collections, to patients. Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and laboratory protocols. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate association of specimens with test orders. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport, following detailed procedures to maintain specimen integrity and prevent contamination. Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing. Record maintenance data and decontamination activities in accordance with laboratory standards and procedures. Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or documentation tools. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines. Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety requirements, and best practices. Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, ensuring clarity and confidentiality. Follow all protocols and procedures necessary to maintain the integrity and traceability of specimens throughout the process. Essential Skills Proficiency in phlebotomy with at least 5 years of phlebotomy experience. Demonstrated ability to perform blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Strong skills in specimen collection, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens. Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test orders. High level of attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts. Solid understanding of physicians' orders and the ability to follow them precisely. Knowledge of proper specimen storage requirements, including temperature control and appropriate collection containers or tubes. Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and regulatory standards. Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures to patients and respond to telephone inquiries. Basic data entry and documentation skills to update patient information and record maintenance and decontamination data accurately. Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Experience packaging specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity. Ability to attend and actively participate in annual department trainings and ongoing education. Comfort reading and communicating laboratory results over the phone in a clear and professional manner. Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detailed protocols and procedures. Commitment to patient-centered care and courteous, respectful interactions. Work Environment This position operates on a first-shift schedule. The role is based in a clinical or laboratory environment where phlebotomy procedures and specimen processing occur regularly. The Phlebotomist III works with standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport materials. The environment requires adherence to OSHA and DEP safety regulations, including proper handling of biological specimens, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and compliance with decontamination and maintenance procedures. The work involves frequent interaction with patients and healthcare staff, as well as telephone communication to address inquiries and provide laboratory result information. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Dayton, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.07 - $25.07/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
