Night Shift Phlebotomist Job Description This night shift phlebotomist role focuses on obtaining and processing blood and nonblood specimens in a busy hospital laboratory setting. You will perform venipuncture and other collection procedures, conduct basic screening tests, and prepare specimens for in-house and reference laboratory testing. Responsibilities Obtain blood specimens through venipuncture and other approved phlebotomy techniques in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect nonblood specimens, including urine, sputum, and throat swabs, according to established laboratory protocols. Perform screening tests on collected specimens and report results promptly and accurately. Process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and documentation. Prepare specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories, following all packaging, documentation, and transport requirements. Manage typical night shift phlebotomy volumes, including starting the morning run at midnight and performing approximately 25-30 blood draws within the first four hours. Respond to calls for codes, arterial blood gases (ABGs), and rapid response situations, providing timely and accurate specimen collection. Work primarily with adult patients while occasionally assisting with pediatric patients, including those in specialized units such as the burn unit. Follow all infection control, safety, and quality assurance procedures to maintain a safe and compliant laboratory environment. Communicate professionally with nursing, laboratory, and clinical staff to coordinate timely specimen collection and address any issues. Maintain accurate records of collections, tests performed, and specimen processing activities. Support a high-volume, fast-paced hospital laboratory by prioritizing tasks and managing time effectively during the night shift. Essential Skills Phlebotomy experience with demonstrated proficiency in blood draws and venipuncture. Phlebotomy certification preferred; if newly certified, must have completed clinical rotations or gained experience in a hospital setting. If not certified, at least 6 months of hands-on phlebotomy experience or clinical training that included practicing phlebotomy on patients. Ability to perform multiple blood draws per shift, including handling an average of 25-30 sticks during the early hours of the night shift. Competence in collecting nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs. Capability to assist with arterial blood gases (ABGs) and respond to codes and rapid response calls. Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate specimen labeling, processing, and documentation. Ability to work effectively in a busy hospital lab environment and manage fluctuating workloads. Willingness and ability to work the night shift from 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM, including rotating weekends. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience working in a hospital laboratory or similar acute care environment. Comfort working primarily with adult patients and occasionally with pediatric patients, including those in specialized units such as burn care. Strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with laboratory and clinical staff. Ability to remain calm and focused during high-pressure situations such as codes and rapid responses. Interest in long-term career growth within a hospital system that supports development and advancement for phlebotomists. Work Environment This role is based in a busy hospital laboratory environment that operates around the clock. The primary schedule for this position is the night shift from 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM. The broader lab schedule includes evening shifts from 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and phlebotomists work rotating weekends, with one consistent weekday off each week to provide a predictable schedule. Night shift phlebotomists start the morning run at midnight and typically perform 25-30 blood draws within the first four hours, while day and evening shifts average higher draw volumes. The lab supports adult patients and a smaller number of pediatric patients, including those in the only burn unit in the area. Phlebotomists are also called to respond to codes, ABGs, and rapid response situations, requiring comfort in urgent and high-acuity settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tulsa, OK. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $20.00/hr.
