Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting a fast-paced family practice environment. You will assist with troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient laboratory operations for a diverse patient population. Responsibilities Perform blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols. Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients before and during the process. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and traceability. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory guidelines. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the prescription or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures according to laboratory standards. Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or documentation. Package specimens for transport, ensuring they are secure, properly labeled, and compliant with handling requirements. Store specimen samples at the correct temperatures and in the appropriate locations to maintain sample integrity. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and proper specimen handling. Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, processing, and workflow. Participate in training activities and support colleagues by sharing best practices and procedural guidance. Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and overall quality of laboratory services. Provide professional, courteous customer service to patients, clinical staff, and other stakeholders. Essential Skills Proven ability to perform blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. Experience collecting, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens in accordance with established procedures. Ability to collect various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following proper protocols. Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and verifying orders. Capability to check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts or orders to ensure complete accuracy. Skill in recording maintenance data and performing decontamination tasks in a clinical or laboratory setting. Proficiency in updating and maintaining accurate patient information. Customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly, courteously, and professionally with patients and staff. Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. High School Diploma or
GED. 0-2
years of phlebotomy or related clinical experience, with willingness to work in a fast-paced environment. Comfort working with varied patient populations, including pediatric and geriatric patients. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in specimen processing and handling within a clinical or laboratory environment. Background in pediatric and geriatric blood draws, even if children are infrequently drawn in this setting. Ability to contribute to training and mentorship of peers or new team members. Aptitude for identifying workflow issues and suggesting practical process improvements. Strong interpersonal skills with a patient-centered approach to care. Ability to remain organized and focused when handling high patient volumes, especially during peak morning hours. Work Environment This role is based in a busy patient service setting that operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, and will follow established procedures for specimen handling, storage, and transport. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlottesville, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $22.00/hr.
