Job Description

Summary The Phlebotomist is responsible for blood specimen collection from patients of all ages in accordance with the department and hospital's safety policies and procedures. Duties and Responsibilities These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned. Collect blood specimens from venous and capillary sites using approved equipment and procedures Identify patients per established patient identification protocols Utilize the laboratory and hospital computer systems to run and audit collection lists, sort the workload, and follow up on pending dispatch specimens Accession blood and body fluid specimens by entering appropriate data into the computer and labeling per established protocols Complete pre-analytical processing steps by centrifugation when appropriate and delivering specimens to the technical departments for testing Process specimens for reference labs by centrifugation, aliquoting, and completing order entries Utilize proper isolation techniques according to hospital policy Utilize the Hospital Information System accurately while performing all functions assigned to this job classification Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care
Education and Experience Minimum Required Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Recent working experience as a Phlebotomist is preferred, but will consider new graduates Certified as a Registered Phlebotomist (CPT), Medical Assistant, EMT or Paramedic preferred. BLS required.
