• Position Summary
• The Phlebotomy Technician provides direct clinical support to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth by collecting blood specimens, performing point-of-care testing, and ensuring proper specimen handling in accordance with clinical, safety, and infection control standards. The technician will work with a diverse patient population in a fast-paced medical environment.

• Qualifications
• Education
• + Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training program with
• a minimum of 120 didactic hours
• (or as required by state law)
• Certifications
• + •Board Certification•: + American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) •or•+ American Medical Technologists (AMT) + •Basic Life Support (BLS)•certification (current) •Experience•+ Minimum •1,040 hours•of experience as a Phlebotomy Technician within the •preceding 36 months•+ Clinical rotations completed during training may be counted toward experience hours + Must have successfully performed: + •At least 100 venipunctures•+ •At least 10 skin punctures•Letters of Recommendation•+ Provide •two (2) letters of recommendation•written within the last •two (2) years•, attesting to clinical competency and patient care skills + •At least one (1)•letter must be from a physician or supervisor who has directly observed and evaluated the candidate + The second letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician, or nurse familiar with the candidate's patient care skills + Letters must include: + Name, title, address, phone number, date, and signature + Commentary on communication skills, professionalism, and interpersonal abilities with patients and staff •Job Duties and Responsibilities•Duties include, but are not limited to: + Collect blood samples and perform Point of Care Testing (POCT) + Verify patient identity using approved identification protocols + Properly label specimens with patient information and collection dates + Select appropriate blood collection techniques based on patient condition + Transport specimens to designated laboratory sections + Centrifuge blood samples as required + Work with a high volume of patients of varying ages and medical conditions + Maintain strict adherence to Infection Control standards + Follow OSHA regulations and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements + Complete required laboratory, POCT, and equipment training and demonstrate competency prior to task performance + Perform only duties for which documented training and competency have been completed + Provide instruction and training when designated as a Preceptor/Instructor Monday through Friday, between 5:00 a.
