Phlebotomist Job Description This phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection in a small outpatient practice, while supporting smooth laboratory workflow through troubleshooting, training, and process improvement. You will interact closely with patients of varying ages, provide clear and courteous explanations of procedures, and ensure specimens are collected, processed, and stored according to established protocols and regulatory standards. Responsibilities Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements. Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring comfort and understanding. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and protocol. Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy. Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures to maintain specimen integrity, including correct temperature and appropriate collection containers and tubes. Store specimens at the required temperature and in the appropriate collection containers, following protocol for transport and handling. Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a clean and safe work area. Update patient information in the appropriate systems and ensure records are accurate and current. Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries, following applicable guidelines. Troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and processing, and make recommendations to improve workflow. Participate in training activities and assist with training other staff in phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure the correct tests are performed and specimens are handled appropriately. Attend annual department trainings and remain current with laboratory procedures and protocols. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, as well as all relevant safety and infection control standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Winchester, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
