Job Description
The Phlebotomist supports providers, patients, and clinic staff by performing specimen collection, patient intake activities, and other clinical support functions within scope of practice. This position is responsible for delivering excellent patient service, ensuring accurate specimen collection and handling, maintaining exam room readiness, and promoting a safe and efficient clinic environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patient Care Greet patients in a professional, courteous, and HIPAA-compliant manner. Verify patient identity using approved identifiers (e.g., name and date of birth). Introduce yourself and explain your role in the patient's care. Escort patients and family members to exam rooms or other designated clinic areas. Obtain and document patient vital signs, including height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and oxygen saturation as appropriate. Perform urinalysis, finger-stick glucose testing, EKGs, and other approved clinical procedures. Document patient concerns, medication changes, allergies, and preferred pharmacy information. Notify providers promptly of abnormal vital signs, patient concerns, or significant changes in condition. Laboratory and Clinical Procedures Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures. Collect, label, process, and prepare specimens according to established protocols. Ensure proper handling, storage, and transport of laboratory specimens. Maintain quality and accuracy in all laboratory-related activities. Follow laboratory quality assurance and infection control procedures. Clinic Operations Prepare and clean exam rooms between patient visits. Maintain adequate supplies and equipment in exam rooms and workstations. Assist patients with scheduling appointments and follow-up visits when appropriate. Support providers during patient examinations and procedures as directed. Assist with training and onboarding of new clinic staff. Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Compliance and Safety Follow all clinic policies, procedures, and infection control standards. Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance at all times. Adhere to OSHA, CLIA, and other applicable regulatory requirements. Demonstrate safe patient handling techniques and workplace safety practices. Qualifications Education and Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a phlebotomy training program required. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Experience Minimum of one (1) year of phlebotomy experience preferred. Experience in a clinic, ambulatory care, or physician office setting preferred. Experience with electronic medical record (EMR/EHR) systems preferred. Preferred Qualifications Previous Medical Assistant experience in a primary care or specialty clinic. Experience performing patient intake, medication reconciliation, and clinical support functions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong phlebotomy and specimen collection skills. Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication abilities. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional discretion. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Proficiency with computer systems and electronic medical records. Physical Requirements Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 20 pounds. Constantly move or handle items weighing up to 10 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach throughout the workday. Ability to assist with patient transfers and support patient weight when necessary.
