Backus Hospital (10309) Backus Hospital The Hospital is a Level 3 Trauma Center. For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. Backus is home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties and is the only area hospital with
LIFE STAR
helicopter services. The Hospital delivers and coordinates a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of its communities. Surgical Critical Care Lead Advanced Practitioner Role Scope Backus Hospital's Surgical Critical Care Team is committed to creating an innovative patient centered delivery system that continuously improves quality of care. The Physician Assistant / Nurse Practitioner (APRN) providers are part of a multidisciplinary team that plans and delivers care for complex surgical patients including general surgery, trauma, vascular, thoracic, neurosurgery and other critical care patients as the service needs dictate. The Advanced Practice Provider works in collaboration with the attending surgical intensivist, the primary surgical admitting team and consultants. Responsibilities include managing multiple patients with varied critical illness, comprehensive physical assessments, interpretation of diagnostic results, hemodynamic/ventilator management, daily progress notes, patient/family education and meetings. Ability to independently perform bedside procedures such as arterial lines, central lines chest tubes, feeding tubes, percutaneous tracheostomy and PEG tubes placement. Develop practice guidelines and clinical pathways with the support of the attending critical care surgeons to ensure high-level, evidence-based care in the SICU. Develop and implement Surgical Critical Care educational curriculum for the surgical APP staff. Participate in the development and/or maintenance of standardized orientation, service
  • based competencies, and educational schedule for new hires. Serve on department/hospital
  • wide committees to help promote patient safety, enhanced patient care, and other balanced scorecard initiatives as delegated by the APP Director.
Identifies, plans, and coordinates the staffing needs of the team in conjunction with the APP Director. Assist Surgical APP director with timekeeping for
SICU APP
staff.

Physician Assistants (PA) positions require current CT Physician Assistants (PA) License and Board certification or eligible. All disciplines require Federal DEA, and CT Controlled Substance Registration
ACLS/BLS ATLS
