An Orthopedics Physician Assistant provides medical care to patients, under the supervision of a physician or surgeon. Works in concert with an orthopedist, and is licensed to practice medicine but has less formal certification than a physician. Performs duties delegated by a physician such as recording patient medical histories, ordering diagnostic tests, or giving immunizations.
Overview Advanced Orthopedics New England (AONE) is seeking a per diem Physician Associate (PA-C) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to support our growing Orthopedic Urgent Care service line. This is an excellent opportunity for an APP seeking a flexible schedule while practicing in a collaborative, subspecialty orthopedic environment. AONE's Orthopedic Urgent Care provides patients with convenient, timely access to orthopedic evaluation and treatment for acute musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. The APP will independently evaluate and manage urgent orthopedic presentations while collaborating with AONE's orthopedic surgeons and broader clinical team when specialty follow-up or escalation of care is indicated. The position will primarily provide weekend Orthopedic Urgent Care coverage on Saturdays, with the hours of 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. Additional weekday or weekend shifts may be available based on organizational needs and the candidate's availability. Core Responsibilities Evaluate and treat patients presenting to Orthopedic Urgent Care with acute and non-emergent orthopedic conditions Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations and develop appropriate treatment plans.
Evaluate and manage conditions including:
Sprains and strains Fractures and suspected fractures Sports-related injuries Joint and musculoskeletal pain Soft tissue injuries Tendon and ligament injuries Arthritis-related complaints Minor orthopedic injuries requiring timely evaluation Order, review, and interpret diagnostic studies, including X-rays and other imaging, as clinically appropriate Perform appropriate procedures within the APP's scope of practice and clinical privileges Apply splints, braces, casts, and other orthopedic supports as indicated Provide patient education regarding diagnosis, treatment, activity restrictions, medications, follow-up, and warning signs Identify injuries or conditions requiring a higher level of care, surgical evaluation, or emergency intervention and coordinate appropriate escalation Coordinate follow-up with AONE orthopedic surgeons and subspecialists when indicated Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the EMR; Athena Health experience preferred, but not required Provide an efficient, compassionate, and patient-centered experience while maintaining appropriate clinical standards Work collaboratively with medical assistants, physicians, administrative staff, and other members of the AONE care team Support the continued development and optimization of AONE's Orthopedic Urgent Care workflows and protocols Qualifications & Requirements Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program Current Connecticut licensure or eligibility to obtain Connecticut licensure Current Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration Current Federal DEA registration or eligibility to obtain Prior orthopedic, urgent care, emergency medicine, or sports medicine experience preferred Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills Ability to independently evaluate and manage a broad range of acute orthopedic conditions Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to recognize clinical red flags and appropriately escalate care Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Willingness to work collaboratively with orthopedic surgeons and the broader clinical team Schedule & Compensation Per diem position Primary coverage: Saturdays 8:30 am - 1:30 pm Location coverage in Enfield and Vernon offices Additional shifts may be available based on organizational needs and candidate availability Flexible scheduling designed to accommodate the candidate's availability Competitive per diem compensation commensurate with experience and clinical expertise Per diem employees are not eligible for the standard full-time employee benefits package About Advanced Orthopedics New England Advanced Orthopedics New England is a growing orthopedic practice dedicated to providing high-quality, patient-centered care across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.
