BH Advanced Practice Provider-Cardiothoracic Surgery

GENERAL SUMMARY

Responsible for providing care to cardiothoracic surgery patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting, including pre-operative consultations, first-assisting in the operating room and post-operative management under physician supervision and within established standards and practices.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Performs all duties within the scope of practice for the perioperative patient including first-assisting in surgery, Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH), Endoscopic Radial Artery Harvesting (ERAH), chest closure, inpatient management (patient consults, ICU/progressive care/general care rounds; ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, writing orders, facilitating patient discharges) and outpatient management (conducting outpatient clinic visits and follow-up as directed by physician) both locally and in outstate clinic locations.

• Coordinates ongoing overall patient care with physician staff, nursing staff and other ancillary care providers to ensure treatment plans are implemented. 4.
• Assists with surgical emergencies. 5.
• Shares on-call responsibilities equally with Cardiothoracic APP team. 6.
• Assists or performs bedside procedures within the scope of practice agreement under the direction of physician. 7.
• Administers medications and injections in compliance with state law and clinic guidelines. 8.
• Plans and participates in educational programs for patients, families, medical students and hospital staff as needed. Provides workshops, seminars and presentations to other professionals. 9.
• Appropriately documents patient care in the electronic medical record.

10. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions. Provides patient education. 11. Triages patient telephone calls as needed, providing consultation. 12. Remains current in advanced cardiothoracic care and, where relevant, translates these findings into clinical practice. 13. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 14. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient's growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies. 2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 3. Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations related to nursing and medical services within practice area. 4. Knowledge of care of the critical and complex patient and their medications possible side effects on patients with co-morbidities. 5. Knowledge of process improvement and change management principles within the healthcare environment. 6. Knowledge of professional regulations and practices in giving and evaluating patient care. 7. Knowledge of patient, family and staff education requirements. 8. Knowledge of medical safety hazards and precautions and ability to maintain quality control standards and sterile technique. 9. Ability to perform physical exam and assessment of the complex patient. 11. Ability to evaluate the patient treatment needs by reviewing past medical/surgical history, performing physical exam and required follow up exams. 12. Ability to facilitate change and manage projects through analysis, key end user engagement, and consensus building within an interdisciplinary environment. 13. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 14. Ability to effectively organize and prioritize projects managing time working with minimal supervision. 15. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master of Science degree in Nursing with current Advance Practice Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska required. Certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner or other related specialty area required. Certification with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for prescriptive authority required. A minimum of one (1) year advanced practice experience preferred. OR Master of Science in Physician Assistant required. Current Physician Assistant licensure from the State of Nebraska required. Certification through AAPA required. Certification with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for prescriptive authority required. A minimum of one (1) year advanced practice experience preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. Bryan Health recognizes American Heart Association (for healthcare professionals), American Red Cross (for healthcare professionals) and the Military Training Network. Advanced Life Support (ACLS) is required.
