General Summary The Physician Assistant must maintain an understanding of and expertise in clinical operations and procedures. Ongoing responsibilities include collaborating with physicians and staff to ensure efficient patient care and workflow. The Physician Assistant provides information and guidance to patients in a calm, confidential, and courteous manner to ensure a positive patient experience. Cooperates fully with other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervising physician or administrator. Essential Job Functions Provide comprehensive patient care through examinations, evaluations, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care. Assess patients, formulate diagnoses, and establish treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising physician as required. Advise scheduling department of any changes or expected complications. Return patient phone calls, provide appropriate medical guidance, and document recommendations. Utilize EMR software to document patient encounters accurately and timely. Meet with pharmaceutical representatives as appropriate. Perform procedures as scheduled or as requested by the supervising physician and within scope of practice. Refill intrathecal pumps with ordered medications under physician supervision and in accordance with applicable regulations. Prescribe medications in accordance with state law, licensure, and standard medical practices. Inform nursing staff of low or missing supplies as needed. Answer patient questions and concerns regarding medications, procedures, diagnoses, and treatment plans. Escort patients to and from examination rooms when necessary. Maintain OSHA compliance and patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards. Record detailed and accurate patient medical records that meet accepted healthcare standards. Perform calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Review insurance criteria and documentation requirements prior to procedures. Participate in continuing education activities and maintain professional growth. Ability to multitask and reprioritize duties as needed to ensure patient safety and efficient operations. Accept direction from supervising physician and administrative leadership. Demonstrate strong communication skills with patients, providers, and team members. Follow established reporting channels and organizational policies. Handle problems with professionalism, tact, and sound judgment. Remain knowledgeable regarding changes in medical practices, treatments, and regulations. Demonstrate knowledge of practice policies and procedures. Provide coverage for and assist other staff members when necessary. Make recommendations to improve patient care, efficiency, and practice operations. Perform other duties as assigned. Scope of Responsibility The Physician Assistant practices medicine in collaboration with the supervising physician and within the scope permitted by state law and applicable regulations. Maintains knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices necessary to effectively perform the duties of the position. Understands the role of the position and its impact on patient care and practice operations. Maintains strict patient confidentiality. Documents detailed and accurate written and verbal patient assessments. Performs any additional duties necessary to promote and enhance the quality of patient care and the overall efficiency of the practice. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program. Current Physician Assistant license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Current DEA registration (or ability to obtain). NCCPA certification required. BLS certification required; ACLS preferred. Prior pain management, orthopedic, PM&R, neurosurgery, or interventional spine experience preferred but not required.
