Job Summary:
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as an expert within a defined scope of practice and performs selected tasks and services in collaboration with Cardiothoracic Surgeons. This position practices under the supervision of the supervising physician to plan, direct, and provide patient care for cardiothoracic patients. The APP offers first assist in the operating room and provides direct primary care to patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.---
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with Cardiothoracic Surgeons in overseeing and coordinating the multidisciplinary care delivered to all cardiothoracic patients, inpatient and outpatient, to optimize quality patient care.
  • Provides operating room coverage including first assist, endoscopic vein harvest, and radial artery harvest.
  • Performs ICU rounding and coverage.
  • Performs floor rounding, consults, and discharges.
  • Provides office/clinic coverage for preoperative consults and postoperative follow-ups.
  • Provides primary care to all cardiothoracic patients including assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, and development of treatment plan.
  • Notifies the attending physician as outlined in the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
  • Monitors guidelines for the management of patients and ensures that services are delivered in compliance with the guidelines established by JPS Health Network and Acclaim Physician Group.
  • Participates in the cardiothoracic call schedule as defined by the department.
  • Assists in the operating room for elective, urgent, and emergent adult cardiac surgery (CABG, valve replacement, aortic dissection) and adult thoracic surgery (robotic lung surgery, lobectomy, decortication) as instructed.
  • Attends quality improvement and team meetings as instructed.
  • Maintains own licensing and credentialing to practice, including all required certifications.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
    Education & Training:
    o Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program OR Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) with RNFA certification. o 2+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR.
      Licensure & Certification:
      o Current unrestricted licensure to practice as required by the State of Texas. o Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and maintained current throughout employment. o Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and maintained current throughout employment. o Completion of unit-specific competency-based orientation program within 90 days of hire.
        Experience:
        o 5+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR preferred. o Proficiency in or willingness to develop skills in intra-aortic balloon pump insertion/removal, pacer management/pacing wire removal, endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, Swan-Ganz insertion and removal, radial artery harvest (endoscopic or open), and chest tube placement preferred.
          Skills & Competencies:
          o Knowledge of advanced cardiothoracic surgical techniques and care management within the specialty area. o Knowledge and understanding of customer service principles. o Knowledge of safety and security principles. o Knowledge of HIPAA regulations. o Skill in solving complex clinical problems and making critical decisions under pressure. o Skilled in analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations. o Skilled in computer and electronic documentation usage. o Skilled in prioritizing work to function efficiently in a high-acuity environment. o Time management skills. o Ability to collaborate with referring physicians, residents, clinical staff and support staff to provide quality patient care. o Ability to present information or ideas concisely, accurately, and clearly verbally and in writing. o Ability to delegate tasks appropriately, with consideration for educational level, age and developmental stage of employee. o Ability to work well under pressure. o Ability to demonstrate patient centered and patient valued behavior. o Ability to work effectively in a matrix environment. o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires results. o Ability to maintain a positive and effective working relationship with coworkers, patients, and visitors.
          Physical Requirements:
          • Prolonged standing, sitting, walking, reading, writing, talking, use of computer.
          • Hearing ability for verbal communication via telephone systems, and person-to-person and to perform assessments such as obtaining blood pressure, cardiac or breath sounds.
          • Clear concise speaking ability to provide information and instruction.
          • Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information.
          • Manual and tactile dexterity for palpation, use of computer keyboard/typing, writing, handling/sorting objects and forms.
          • Flexibility and body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, standing, reaching, lifting and moving objects and equipment (approximately 25lbs. or more with assistance), sitting.
          • Able to meet physical demands of the job with assistive or adaptive devices or reasonable accommodations.
          Work Environment:
          • Work is indoors and may be subject to schedule changes and/or variable work hours.
          • Exposure to environment temperature changes, hazardous/noxious fumes, fetid smells, air/blood borne pathogens such as HIV, Hep. B, TB, and other contagious diseases.
          • Environment is noisy, involves frequent interruptions or distractions.
          • Duties subject to stressful pressures and deadlines.
          • Wearing of uniform or a specific style/type of clothing and jewelry/accessories limitations or restriction may be required.
