Houston Methodist West Hospital is seeking a Surgical Physician Assistant to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this PRN role, you will assist surgeons in the operating room, perform pre- and post-operative assessments, manage patient care plans, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure excellent outcomes. You will support services including emergency care, heart care, orthopedics, and women's services. Responsibilities Provide first-assist services in the operating room under the supervision of attending surgeons, including exposure, suturing, hemostasis, and tissue handling across multiple surgical specialties. Conduct pre- and post-operative assessments, obtain histories and perform physical examinations, and contribute to perioperative planning in collaboration with the surgical team. Manage inpatient surgical patients, including daily rounding, writing orders, reviewing labs and imaging, and updating treatment plans according to established protocols and surgeon direction. Perform procedures within scope of practice, such as wound care, dressing changes, drain and line management, staple and suture removal, and simple bedside procedures as credentialed. Document all patient encounters, assessments, procedures, and care plans accurately and timely in the electronic health record to support safe, coordinated care. Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, therapists, and other members of the care team to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered surgical care aligned with Houston Methodist standards. Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, perioperative expectations, pain management, wound care, activity restrictions, and follow-up to support safe recovery and community wellness. Respond to urgent clinical needs on surgical units as appropriate for a PA, assisting in the recognition and stabilization of deteriorating patients and communicating changes promptly to the surgical team. Demonstrate a commitment to the hospital's culture of integrity, compassion, innovation, and continuous quality improvement by participating in performance initiatives, safety practices, and evidence-based care. Adapt to a PRN schedule, providing coverage for days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet patient care demands and support operating room and inpatient service coverage.
