Full Job Description Job Description:
The Special Pathogens Lead serves as a medical epidemiologist and subject matter expert in biological threat preparedness, laboratory-acquired infections, and rare or emerging infectious diseases. This role provides scientific and operational leadership across public health partners, supporting surveillance, outbreak response, and preparedness for high-consequence pathogens such as anthrax, Ebola, and smallpox. The position is critical to ensuring evidence-based guidance, regulatory compliance, and citywide healthcare readiness for bioterrorism and emerging threats.

Pay:
$145/per hour paid weekly
Qualifications:
Valid license to practice medicine in New York State Completion of an accredited residency program with at least 3 years of experience in internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, or related specialty Board certification or eligibility in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or related subspecialty Completion of an accredited fellowship program (minimum 2 years) in infectious diseases, pulmonary medicine, or related field
Skills and Requirements:
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex scientific data clearly Public health experience, especially in cross-agency collaboration and strategic planning Experience with rare or emerging infectious diseases Ability to rapidly review and synthesize scientific literature Proficiency with data systems and maintaining data security standards Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic public health environments
Preferred:
Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) or equivalent training
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide subject matter expertise on bioterrorism agents including Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, and other Category A pathogens Lead preparedness and response efforts for biological threat agents in collaboration with emergency response teams Serve as expert on viral hemorrhagic fevers and emerging infectious diseases Develop, manage, and update protocols, reporting tools, and safety procedures Support investigations of laboratory-acquired infections and exposures Participate in on-call rotations and Doctor of the Week program Assist in outbreak investigations and public health response activities Coordinate with local, state, and federal partners to ensure preparedness and response alignment
