Job Summary CT/Special Procedures Technologist:
Operates computed tomography (CT) scanner to produce cross-sectional radiographs of patient's body for diagnostic purposes: Positions and immobilizes patient on examining table, using supportive devices to obtain precise patient position and following protocols specified by
RADIOLOGIST
(medical ser.) 070.101-090. Administers contrast media orally and/or intravenously. Enters data, such as type of scan requested, slice thickness, scan time, and other technical data into computer, using knowledge of radiologic technology and computed tomography. Starts CT scanner to scan designated anatomical area of patient. Talks to patient over intercom system and observes patient through window of control room to monitor patient safety and comfort. Views images of organs or tissue on video display screen to ensure quality of pictures. Starts scanner to produce radiographs. Evaluates radiographs, and computer generated information for technical quality in PACS.
Special Procedures:
Operates diagnostic imaging equipment to produce contrast enhanced radiographs of blood vessels to aid physician in diagnosis and treatment of disease: Positions patient in examining position, using immobilization devices, such as head or shoulder braces. Operates fluoroscope to aid physician to view and guide wire or catheter through blood vessel to area of interest. Fills automatic injector with contrast media, sets flow rate, and activates injection of contrast media into blood vessels of patient, as directed by physician. Monitors video display of area of interest and adjusts density and contrast to obtain optimum exposure. Starts filming sequence. Reviews all images for QA in PACS. Essential Functions C. Describe the physical efforts, manual dexterity and cognitive skills required for the job (i.e., eye/hand coordination, lifting, pulling, walking, concentration, analysis, customer sensitivity, etc.). On feet most of day. Lifting and positioning of patients. Moving of heavy mobile equipment.

C. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • 1.
Demonstrate competency in all exams performed (i.e. positioning, proper labeling, patient identification, left/right markers, follows CT protocols, etc.) 2. Calculates the number of scans to be obtained and amount of IV contrast to be used based on patient size and operates the CT ensuring the required images were obtained as ordered by Physician/Radiologist. Consults with Radiologist to review and ascertain whether additional scanning is required, when needed. 3. Makes special radiographic examinations requiring special equipment and procedures such as: intravenous pyelograms, intravenous cholangiograms, bronchograms, surgery cases such as hip pinnings, Performs trauma and other high-risk radiologic procedures in CT. 4. Competent and able to critique all images in PACS and repeats images as necessary while maintaining an acceptable Repeat/Reject Rate. Operates equipment for the transfer of images 5. Prepare x-ray room prior to first patient (i.e. room stocked for needed equipment and supplies) and keeps room and work area neat and clean at all times. 6. Instructs in layman terms to relieve patient of anxiety and prepares patient for Radiologic / CT examinations. 7. Monitors patient condition by directly observing the patient during the examination and recognizing and reporting abnormal changes in the patient's condition. Able to assess patient pain interfering with Imaging procedure; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention. 8. Determines the most suitable anatomical posture and positions and shields patient accordingly. Adheres to all Radiation safety requirements, ALARA. 9. Interacts professionally with patient/family/coworkers. Must possess the ability to work in a high stress area and maintain a positive attitude. 10. Completes all work or completes a proper hand-off before clocking out and leaving. 11. Performs duties according to ARRT standards / ACR standards / Nyack Hospital protocols. 12. Set up room, sterile trays and injector, prep patient and set up sterile field as needed. 13. Responsible for safe handling of equipment. 14. Completed IV Contrast Screening forms and Metformin Patient Education form when required. 15. Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly. 16. Attends departmental in-services and Mega Education Day, as scheduled. 17. Attends at least 4 monthly department meetings, reads and signs off on meeting minutes when not in attendance. 18. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities. 19. Must be able to rotate hospital holidays. Name will be placed on Mandation rotation list to cover open shifts when necessary as per CWA union contract. 20. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital.
