Sports Management Full Job Description Deputy Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs South Orange Village Starting Salary:
$80,000 The Deputy Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs supports the leadership, planning, and daily operations of the Village's recreation and cultural programming. This position plays a key role in delivering high-quality community programs, events, and services that enhance quality of life for residents of South Orange Village. Position Overview The Deputy Director assists the Director in managing all aspects of the Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, including program development, event coordination, facility operations, staff supervision, budgeting support, and community engagement. The role requires strong organizational skills, public-facing communication, and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced municipal environment. Key Responsibilities Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing recreation programs, events, and community initiatives Supervise full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff, including program coordinators and event personnel Support management of municipal facilities, parks, and recreation spaces Help develop and monitor departmental budgets, purchasing, and vendor relationships Coordinate logistics for large-scale community events and seasonal programming Ensure compliance with safety standards, municipal policies, and risk management procedures Assist in marketing and promoting programs through digital platforms, print materials, and community outreach Step in as acting department lead when required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Public Administration, Sports Management, or related field preferred 3-5 years of experience in municipal recreation, youth and/or adult programming, event management, or a related field Supervisory experience strongly preferred Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills Ability to manage budgets and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously Proficiency with scheduling, registration, and recreation management software a plus Understanding and experience in pool management is preferred Evening and weekend availability required based on programming and events Compensation Starting salary: $80,000 annually Benefits package in accordance with municipal employment standards Work Environment This position is based in a municipal office setting with frequent work in the field at parks, facilities, and community event sites. The role requires flexibility, responsiveness, and a strong commitment to public service.
