Job Description

Provide expert, compassionate care in a dynamic surgical environment as an Operating Room Registered Nurse, serving patients from pediatrics to geriatrics. Deliver comprehensive perioperative nursing care - preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative - while collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team to ensure patient safety and quality outcomes.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care before, during, and immediately after surgery. Prepare and maintain the surgical suite, ensuring all equipment and supplies are ready and functional. Provide direct care and monitoring of patients in all states of consciousness throughout the perioperative process. Chart all care given and document the use of surgical supplies and equipment. Assist in the postoperative recovery area, including patient assessments with anesthesia providers. Communicate effectively with surgical staff, surgeons, anesthesia personnel, patients, and families. Respond rapidly and appropriately to emergencies during surgery. Maintain a safe, sterile, and supportive environment for patients and the surgical team.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Active Alaska Registered Nurse license required. Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or obtain within 6 months of hire. Prior experience in operating room and/or critical care areas (ICU, ER, PACU) strongly preferred. Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CNOR) preferred. Ability to remain calm and effective during high-pressure, emergent situations. Excellent observation, assessment, and documentation skills. Strong commitment to patient safety, privacy, and adherence to regulatory standards. Flexibility to work varied hours and take on-call shifts as needed. Willingness to cross-train and assist in special projects within the department. Demonstrates teamwork and collaborative spirit.
ENVIRONMENT
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The Surgery department is located on the second floor and provides care to patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric populations. The work environment is fast-paced and can be challenging due to complex patient needs, family concerns, surgeon and anesthesia demands, and critical emergencies. The role requires physical stamina, including standing, walking, and performing repetitive hand motions for long periods, as well as the ability to lift or exert force as needed safely.
