Plans, assesses, and evaluates student health and development status—including mandated screenings—to identify medical issues impacting learning. Designs and implements customized health maintenance plans to meet individual student needs. Interprets health/developmental assessments and medical findings for parents, teachers, administrators, health technicians, and other professionals. Connects students with appropriate community resources and maintains communication with parents and agencies to encourage necessary treatment. Assists families in overcoming financial, transportation, and other barriers to accessing required health services. Coordinates and conducts tuberculosis skin testing for school staff and volunteers upon request. Determines and enforces policies for communicable disease control aligned with District and California Department of Public Health guidelines. Acts as a resource and trains teachers/administrators, contributing to health curricula on topics like nutrition, mental health, genetics, and disease prevention. Trains school staff in first aid guidelines and establishes school first aid policies in accordance with District standards. Provides training and in-service programs for new nursing staff, classified personnel, and health technicians. Counseled pupils and families on identifying and utilizing private and community healthcare delivery services. Collaborates with families and staff regarding health-related attendance problems and helps students adjust to physical, mental, and social limitations. Explores attitudes, values, and information affecting health behaviors with families and students. Provides professional supervision to ensure health services comply with state laws and District policies. Teaches, supervises, mentors, and evaluates non-licensed support personnel providing Special Physical Health Care Services (SPHCS). Assists in identifying campus health and safety hazards, participates in professional meetings, and handles duties assigned during crises or emergencies .
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of/or ability to obtain a California School Nurse Services credential. (Preliminary credential may be obtained if candidate possesses R.N. and Bachelor's Degree.) Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certificate (preferred). Public Health Nurse certificate (preferred). Current professional level CPR. C alifornia Audiometric certificate needs to be completed shortly after hire. Successful nursing experience is normally required before assignment to this class. Knowledge of Specialized Physical Health Care procedures, especially those commonly associated with students with severe disabilities (preferred ).
