Temporary / Contracted Position Position Summary The Camp Nurse serves as the primary medical support professional for Westminster Woods Summer Camp Programs. This role is responsible for medication management, first aid response, documentation, and overall health oversight for campers and staff throughout the program. The Camp Nurse ensures that all participants receive safe, timely, and appropriate medical care in accordance with camp procedures, state regulations, and their professional nursing standards. Essential Responsibilities Medication Management Receive all camper and staff medications during registration check-in. The nurse is responsible to check the medication label and instructions and make what is on the label aligns with what the guardian tells the nurse is the proper dosing. If the guardian instructs the nurse to distribute the medication that does align with what the label states, the nurse will contact the doctor who prescribed the medication. Medication must come with the proscribed prescriptions (no meds in bags or home cases). Log, document, and safely store all medications using camp-approved systems. Dispense medications at designated times, including: o All meal periods o Bedtime o Physician-ordered schedules Maintain secure storage of medications at all times. Medication must be stored behind 3 locks. Communicate any medication concerns or discrepancies to the Program Manager immediately. Medical Care & Response Provide first aid, basic treatment, and health assessments as needed. Respond promptly to injuries, illnesses, or emergent health concerns throughout the retreat. Remain on-call and available for medical needs at all times during the contracted dates. Determine when outside medical services (urgent care, ER, ambulance) are necessary and coordinate with leadership. Maintain clear communication with the on-site Health Center Coordinator and First Aiders regarding shared health responsibilities. Communication & Documentation Complete all required incident reports, treatment logs, and medication documentation. Notify the Program Manager of all significant medical events or changes in participant health. Maintain confidentiality and uphold HIPAA-aligned practices when handling medical information. Communicate clearly and professionally with staff, parents (when necessary), and camp leadership. Health & Safety Oversight Support a safe camp environment by monitoring general camper and staff wellness. Provide guidance to staff regarding minor health concerns, hydration, illness prevention, and safety practices. Participate in emergency procedures and respond according to training and camp protocols. Professional Expectations • Maintain professional nursing conduct, ethical standards, and appropriate boundaries with youth and staff. Follow all Westminster Woods policies, emergency protocols, and documentation requirements. Refrain from using alcohol, marijuana, or illegal substances while on duty or on camp property. Uphold a calm, supportive, and safety-centered presence during all interactions. Required Qualifications • Current RN licensure in the State of California. CPR/AED and First Aid certification (current by retreat start date). Experience in pediatric, camp, school, or community health environments preferred. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with camp leadership. Ability to respond rapidly to emergencies and manage multiple health needs at once. Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills. Physical Requirements • Ability to walk across uneven outdoor terrain. Ability to respond quickly to incidents across camp property. Ability to lift/transport up to 25 lbs of medical supplies if needed. Liabilities & Scope of Practice • The Camp Nurse is expected to work within the legal and professional scope of their nursing license. The Camp Nurse is responsible for following all state and camp regulations regarding medication handling, documentation, and emergency response. The Camp Nurse is not liable for injuries or conditions resulting from: o Participant behavior that violates camp rules o Undisclosed medical information o Pre-existing medical conditions not communicated to the camp The Camp Nurse must notify the Program Manager of any situation that exceeds their scope of training or requires external medical intervention. Malpractice/professional liability insurance is recommended for contracted nurses but not required by the camp. Contract & Compensation • This position is classified as an independent contractor . Compensation is a flat rate of $800 per session. Lodging is provided in Redwood A with a private bathroom at no cost. Meals are provided during the retreat. Contract may be terminated for failure to fulfill duties, unsafe conduct, or policy violations. All nurses must be live scanned under Westminster Woods Camp and Conference Center.
