School Year Responsibilities:
School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self- management, self-advocacy, and learning.
Requirements :
The successful candidate must be a Registered Nurse, hold a current CT license and possess current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification. This position is full-time. The salary and benefits associated with this position are outlined in the current East Haven School Nurses' Union contract.
Job Title:
School Nurse School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement and health of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
The successful candidate will:
Promote 21st Century educational excellence through the vigorous support of the mission and goals of East Haven Public Schools; and Facilitate individual, departmental, and school excellence through the support of high quality personnel, reinforcement of best instructional practices, encouragement of a culture of collaboration, and a focus on student learning.
Qualifications/Credentials:
Registered Nurse, current CT license as defined by Section 20-87a Connecticut General Statutes and currently licensed in the state of Connecticut; Current CPR/AED/First Aid Certified; Equivalent of at least 1 year fulltime employment as an RN within the past five years; School Nursing, Public Health, Pediatrics, Emergency or Critical care experience preferred. Bachelor's degree preferably in nursing or related field (i.e., public health, health education) an advanced degree will be considered an asset. Current State of Connecticut driver's license required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of nursing skills and practice Ability to provide professional documentation in writing and electronic records Ability to prepare a professional report as requested Ability to learn and work with computer software, student data systems, email and internet Ability to effectively communicate and work cohesively with colleagues and members of the school community Possess a positive attitude, integrity and maintain confidentiality Demonstrated office management skills, organizational skills, and multi-tasking skills essential
Illustrative Duties:
Systematically assesses student health status and the health needs of students. Plans intervention and evaluates the outcome under the scope of nursing practice; Prepares and maintains cumulative health records for each student, following the current State of Connecticut Cumulative Health Records (CHR) Guidelines; Participates in Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten and new entering student registration including reviewing the entry to school physical examination, immunizations and health history; Trains designated staff members in the administration and documentation of medication and/or treatments; Develops, maintains and/or updates Nursing Care Plan for students with chronic or acute health conditions. Shares the Nursing Care Plan with colleagues and school personnel to ensure the student health needs are met during the school day; Develops, maintains and/or updates individualized student emergency plans when required; Provides state mandated screening and referrals for vision, hearing and posture; Notifies parents of illness and/or injury of student while in school; Reports observations of child abuse or neglect to the Department of Children and Families; Administers first aid and evaluates all injuries for proper referral and treatment; Follows up on absences related to health, contacting parents/guardians when necessary and making referrals to school or community services as indicated; Advocates for the health rights or children and their families within the school setting and between the school and community; Counsels and makes referrals for pregnancy; Counsel's students, parents and school personnel in health problems, provide health education programs for the prevention and control of disease; Participates in school safety and health education programs i.e. crisis team, student assistance, child study teams and programs such as hygiene education, asthma education, allergy education, health fairs, etc.; Participates in emergency preparedness activities for school and community through training, drills, exercises; Prepares CSDE reports and surveys as required, completes state health department reports as required; Attends staff meeting and in an active participant in PPT meetings as needed, consults with school specialists, attends meetings and seminars concerning school health issues; Assumes responsibility for continuing education and professional development through attendance at professional conferences, training and subscription to professional publications; Participates in individual and professional growth, evaluation and goal setting; Performs related duties as required

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel. This is a specialized teaching position that falls under the Teachers' Contract.
