Provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesia staff continuously and as needed about patient's condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Assesses operating room for cleanliness, readiness and obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met. Following Areas:
Prior to first case of the day aid the Circulating Nurse in prepare room assigned using sterile technique. Damp dust flat surfaces, lights and rooms. Review surgeon's preference card for all supplies needed. Pull the needed supplies and equipment for each procedure if not done the previous evening. Open the case using the basic principles of sterile technique and standard operating room procedure. Place instruments and supplies in appropriate areas. Discard packages in uncontaminated container (leave in OR room) when the case is opened. Scrub sink area outside the operating room and begin surgical scrub using disposable brushes. Scrub both hands and elbows per procedure. When entering operating room, hold hands upward and not dripping. Use sterile towel to dry hands and arms for proper drying technique. Antiseptic hand gel can be used per product directions. Appropriate gown and glove using the "closed gloving method". Count all supplies needed for the procedure with circulating nurse assistance. Check all labels of solutions and drugs for date with circulating nurse. (All solutions are labeled when on the sterile field) Assist surgeon and assistant in gowning and gloving. Assist surgeon in draping the patient using sterile technique. Place equipment and instruments readily available per physician's preference. Ability to pass instruments quickly to surgeon when needed keeping them clean of blood and tissue. Aware of importance of patient safety at all times. When case closing; count all items at appropriate times with the circulating nurse per Procedure on Sponge and Needle Counts. Accurate specimen handling (i.e., what area and the name of the specimen). Pass specimen to circulating nurse per surgeon's approval. Provide appropriate name and location to identify. Prepare dressing per surgeon's when closing case. NO dressing on field until final count has been accomplished. After dressing is applied remove unnecessary supplies and place in appropriate places. Secure room and make ready for next case.
Professional Requirements :
Meets dress code standards. Adheres to policy on Atttire in the Operating Room. Completes annual education requirements. Maintains regulatory requirements. Maintains patient confidentially at all times. Reports to work on time and as schedule, completes work within designated time. Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly. Completes in-services and returns in a timely manner. Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled. Attends at least 8 staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeging minutes. Represents the organization in appositive and professional manner. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility as well as the focus statement of the department.

Current BLS certification Current ACLS and PALS preferred
Language Skills:
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages desirable

Basic computer knowledge.
