This role involves working day and night shifts, with a 36-hour weekly schedule, in a dynamic hospital environment. The ideal candidate will possess extensive clinical experience across various specialties, including critical care, trauma, emergency medicine, and post-acute care. As a Travel RN-Utilization Review Specialist, you will play a vital role in ensuring appropriate patient care, optimizing hospital resources, and maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations. Your expertise will directly contribute to improved patient outcomes and efficient healthcare delivery.
License:
Must have compact RN license and OR License as they are providing remote care to facilities in Oregon. They must also be willing to apply for D.C. licensure upon offer.- Duties Conduct comprehensive patient assessments by reviewing medical records, vital signs, diagnostic evaluations, and clinical data to determine appropriate utilization of hospital services.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including physicians, nurses, case managers, and discharge planners—to evaluate the necessity of inpatient stays and outpatient services. Manage utilization review processes for diverse patient populations such as ICU, pediatric (PICU), Geriatrics, behavioral health, and infectious disease cases. Ensure compliance with health regulation policies and HIPAA standards while handling sensitive patient information within electronic health records (EHR). Facilitate discharge planning by coordinating post-acute care services, outpatient follow-ups, and managing medical records documentation. Support case management activities by managing patients as a nurse case manager, overseeing medical-surgical cases, and ensuring appropriate resource allocation. Assist in diagnostic evaluation and managed care processes to optimize patient care pathways while adhering to hospital medicine protocols. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare policies related to inpatient and outpatient services to support accurate utilization management. Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on patient service excellence and efficient hospital operations. Skills Extensive critical care experience including ICU, Level I Trauma Center experience, and Level II Trauma Center experience. Proven background in emergency room settings with OR experience preferred. Strong knowledge of physiology, medical terminology, and hospital medicine practices. Experience with inpatient and outpatient care across pediatrics (PICU), geriatrics, behavioral health, and post-acute settings. Familiarity with health regulation policies such as HIPAA and medical records management. Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems for documentation and data analysis. Excellent patient assessment skills coupled with the ability to manage complex cases involving infectious diseases or acute care needs. Effective communication skills for collaborating with healthcare teams and supporting patient service initiatives. Ability to interpret diagnostic evaluations accurately and support discharge planning efficiently. Knowledge of medical-surgical nursing practices along with intake procedures for diverse patient populations. Strong understanding of utilization management principles within managed care frameworks. Experience managing patients in primary care settings or outpatient clinics is advantageous.
