Job Description

Directs specific nursing care for patients suffering from trauma or illness that requires emergency attention and as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital. Must recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions, with the ability to deploy rapid assessment and treatment of patients in highly critical situations, particularly during the initial phase of acute illness and trauma, where every second is important.

None Completes appropriate and thorough patient evaluations and treatment plans consistently. Assists the emergency room doctor to treat patients immediately, and in a timely fashion. Uses critical thinking to act quickly to assess and treat patients. Recognizes potential for complications or risk factors and initiate action to correct or reduce risks. Prioritizes accurate assessments of patient's immediate conditions or needs Accompanies emergency room physician on patient assessment to answer questions, receive instructions and note patients care requirements. Functions as a team player and practices effectively with all areas of the hospital and its' providers. Communicates precise patient assessments to the emergency room physicians. Collaborates with emergency room physicians and other health care members such as lab, radiology, EMA, medical examiner, etc. to coordinate patient's plan of care. Gives direct patient care, evaluates all care given and patients' reactions, both emotionally and physically. Communicates appropriately with the patient's family. Provides care and makes accurate assessments in high-stress and possibly life-threatening situations. Demonstrates adequate knowledge and competency in emergent situations (i.e. IV's, medications, resuscitations) Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate emergent care to any age-related needs of the patients served. Possess the emotional stability to cope with death and unusual occurrences and conditions. Remain calm adn sympathetic as they perform their duties. Anticipates patient needs and ensures that pain is controlled. Identified and reseraches emergency room services probelmes and assists in solutions. Reports incidences and unusual occurrences such as violence, theft, med error, etc. Takes ownership and responsibility fro addressing problems (i.e., gets involved). Addresses concerns with manger and/or co-workers professionally and privately. Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Reports safety problems and makes recommendations. Assists in orientation of new personnel to the emergency room. Attends and contributes to monthly staff meetings and in-service educational programs. Attends 80% of mandatory hospital in-service programs. Attends 50% of nurse's monthly meetings. Maintains skills and knowledge through participation in educational programs, seminars, & workshops and reading professional journals. Maintain current certifications, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS, RN License. Complete mandatory Kahuku Medical Center online competencies, and departmental competencies. Respects patients and families and involves them in clinical decision-making. Acknowledges a patient's presence immediately by making eye contact and introducing themselves. Demonstrates age-appropriate skills when communicating with patients and families. Incorporates complex comprehension care for patient education/discharge planning. Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures, safety program requirements, corporate compliance program, standards of conduct, all applicable statutes, rules, and regulations of Kahuku Medical Center. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor and emergency room physicians.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
The emergency room nurse must possess knowledge about healthcare in general and on specific levels provide care to patients of all ages. Must be prepared to treat a wide variety of illnesses and injuries, ranging from a fever to heart attack. Most possess knowledge about emergency nursing in general and in relation to diagnosis and appropriate care. Ability to learn electronic medical record systems and documentation. Ability to comply with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Strong time management skills with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
Education and Experience:
Required:
BSN or associate's degree in nursing, or diploma in nursing Current unencumbered State of Hawaii nurse license
Preferred:
Two years of experience in emergency nursing
Physical Requirements:
Long periods of standing and walking. Occasional bending, stooping, reaching and sitting. Continuous use of vision (corrected vision, depth perception, wide field of vision and color vision) Pushing and pulling up to 300 lbs. Lifting with assistance up to 150 lbs. Carrying up to 50 lbs. Ability to converse, read, write, understand, and instruct in English. Continuous attention to detail, concentration, and alertness, with frequent mathematical ability. Exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
