A Registered Nurse provides medical care and treatment, educates patients about their conditions, and provides emotional support to patients and families. Works in hospitals, schools, clinics or community health centers. Works under the supervision of a physician or other specialist, and serves as the primary point of care for patients in a hospital setting. May specialize in emergency room work, or treatment for a particular condition, or specialize in working with infants, the elderly or other patient groups. May work as an advanced practice specialists and prescribe medications in addition to offering specialty care.
Per the district's approved substitute pay schedule Position Summary Gilbert Community School District is seeking caring and dependable Registered Nurses to provide substitute coverage when a school nurse is unavailable. This is a flexible opportunity to support students, respond to routine health needs, and help maintain a safe and welcoming school environment. Substitute nurses follow established health plans and district procedures while coordinating with the district's RN team for guidance and support as needed. Qualifications Current State of Iowa Registered Nurse license Current Basic Life Support or CPR certification Clinical, hospital, pediatric, or school nursing experience preferred Ability to communicate effectively and respond calmly to student health needs Commitment to confidentiality and student well being Primary Responsibilities Provide routine care for students who become ill or injured during the school day Administer medications and treatments according to established orders and district procedures Follow existing Individual Health Plans, 504 Plans, emergency action plans, and physician orders Support students with chronic health needs using established care procedures Respond to urgent health situations and contact the appropriate district nurse, parent, administrator, or emergency service when needed Communicate with families and school staff as appropriate Document health office visits, medications, treatments, and related communication Provide support and direction to health associates when needed Maintain an organized and welcoming health office Follow district policies and applicable nursing requirements Professional Expectations Create a calm, caring, and reassuring environment for students Maintain positive relationships with students, families, and staff Protect student privacy and confidentiality Demonstrate dependability, flexibility, and professional judgment Work collaboratively with district nurses, health associates, and administrators Physical Requirements The position includes sitting, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and occasional lifting or moving of up to 40 pounds. The substitute nurse must be able to respond to student health needs throughout the school building.
