Assigned School(s) Job Summary The School Nurse at Carefirst Mobile Nursing Service plays a critical role in supporting student health and wellness by providing direct medical care, managing student health records, and ensuring compliance with immunization and physical exam requirements. The school nurse will also collaborate with parents, educators, and healthcare providers to promote the well-being of all students, particularly those with pre-existing health conditions. Key Responsibilities 1. Medication Administration & Direct Medical Care Administer medications to students as prescribed, following proper dosage and documentation procedures. Monitor students with pre-existing health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, severe allergies) and provide necessary medical interventions. Respond to medical emergencies and administer first aid, CPR, or other life-saving measures as needed. Maintain emergency medical kits and ensure all medical supplies are properly stocked and in compliance with safety regulations. Assess students with acute health complaints and determine if further medical intervention is required. 2. Health Records Management Maintain and update student health files, including immunization records, allergy alerts, and medical history. Ensure confidentiality and compliance with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) when handling medical records. Conduct regular audits of student health records to ensure information is accurate and up to date. Assist school administration in preparing health reports required by state and federal health agencies. 3. Immunization & Physical Exam Compliance Verify that all students meet state-mandated immunization and physical examination requirements. Notify parents of missing or overdue immunizations and guide them in fulfilling compliance. Coordinate with school administrators to track immunization compliance rates and prepare reports for regulatory agencies. Provide guidance to families on exemption requests when applicable under state law. 4. Collaboration & Communication with Parents and Guardians Communicate with parents/guardians to ensure that submitted health records and medication administration forms are accurate. Educate parents on chronic illness management and provide resources for at-home care when needed. Notify parents of health incidents occurring during school hours and coordinate follow-up care. Arrange health conferences with parents and school staff for students with complex medical needs. 5. Health Education & Advocacy Provide health education on hygiene, disease prevention, and wellness initiatives to students and staff. Assist in the development and implementation of school-wide health policies that promote a safe and healthy learning environment. Support students with special needs by working with Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams to create medical care plans. Serve as a liaison between the school and public health agencies regarding student health matters.

Required Qualifications & Skills Education & Certification:

Registered Nurse (RN) with active state licensure. School Nurse Certification (if required by state law). Current CPR and First Aid certification (AHA or Red Cross preferred). BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) preferred but not required.

Skills & Competencies:

Strong clinical assessment skills in pediatric and adolescent health. Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and state health regulations. Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with students, parents, and school staff. Ability to multi-task and work independently in a school setting. Strong documentation and record-keeping skills Experience with medication administration and emergency response procedures. Cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse student populations. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work is primarily conducted in a school health office but may require travel between multiple schools. May involve standing, walking, and lifting students or medical equipment. Must be comfortable handling medical emergencies and high-stress situations. Expected to comply with school policies regarding confidentiality and professional behavior.
