Special Services Medical Attendant Job Description Purpose:
To oversee the medical services for an identified student while facilitating student access to the curriculum and all other appropriate school sponsored activities.Responsible to:

1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Current First Aid and CPR certification. 3. Certified nurse assistant or licensed practical nurse or registered nurse certification preferred.Essential Functions:
1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities a. Adhere to the established protocol(s) developed by the physician of record, and validated by the school nurse, as the basis of care for assigned student(s). b. Assist in facilitating the personal, social, and physical development of assigned student(s) while providing the medical services defined in the student's healthcare plan. c. Assist in establishing a safe and healthy learning environment. d. Ensure that medical protocol(s) and associated medications/medical devices are cataloged by the school nurse. e. Communicate effectively with members of the school district, medical community, and district patrons. f. Provide relevant information and training to team members regarding the healthcare needs of the student(s) served if appropriate and required to ensure student safety. g. React to emergencies calmly to help maintain a safe and productive environment. h. Participate in the professional development activities required to maintain the healthcare license/certificate required for the assignment. i. Support the philosophy and mission of the building and Derby Public Schools. j. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations. 2.Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
a. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods. b. Requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach. c. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments. d. Requires the ability to occasionally assist in lifting or positioning students. e. Requires the physical agility and strength to perform in emergency situations, such as CPR or Heimlich maneuver. f. The ability to physically maneuver wheelchairs, standers, and other devices required for student positioning or locomotion. g. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.General Responsibilities:
1. Assist in the daily educational routine of the student under the direction of the case manager and school nurse. 2. Provide required medical assistance in a manner that reduces the amount of time the student is separated from the educational environment and other students. 3. Provide notice to parent/guardian when the assigned student is ill or injured in a manner consistent with the agreed upon protocol. 4. Adhere to the "privacy rules" of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 5. Document and report health concerns to the school nurse, parents, and attending physician as appropriate. 6. Administer daily and emergency medication as delegated and/or prescribed by the attending physician. 7. Assist with emergency care for all ill and injured students if recruited by the school nurse or a unique situation warrants healthcare assistance. 8. Conform to board policy and health department guidelines for all services rendered. 9. Document and maintain healthcare service records as defined in the healthcare plan. 10. When medical services to the assigned student(s) are not needed, assist with curriculum and instruction activities as requested by the case manager. 11. Perform other educational duties as delegated by the case manager or school nurse that do not conflict with the primary healthcare services provided to the assigned student(s). 12. Adhere to all district health and safety policies. 13.
