A Registered Nurse provides medical care and treatment, educates patients about their conditions, and provides emotional support to patients and families. Works in hospitals, schools, clinics or community health centers. Works under the supervision of a physician or other specialist, and serves as the primary point of care for patients in a hospital setting. May specialize in emergency room work, or treatment for a particular condition, or specialize in working with infants, the elderly or other patient groups. May work as an advanced practice specialists and prescribe medications in addition to offering specialty care.

JOB GOAL
To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Promotes and protects the optimal health status of children. 2.Provides health assessments.a.Obtains a health and developmental history.b.
As mandated by the State, screens students for vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, dental, etc., and evaluates findings.c.
Observes the child for development and health patterns in making nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis.d.
Identifies deviant health findings.3.Develops and implements a health plan.a.
Interprets the health status of students to parents and school personnel.b.
Initiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow-through.c.
Provides on-going health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agencies.d.
Recommends and helps to implement modification of school programs to meet students health needs.e.
Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students.4.Maintains, evaluates and interprets student health records.5.Plans and implements school health management protocols for the child with special health needs, including the administration of medication. 6.Develops procedures and provides for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances.7.Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventative immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting and follow-up of contagious diseases.8.Recommends provisions for a safe school environment conducive to learning.9.Provides health education.a.
Reinforces parenting skills as they relate to child development and health needs of children.b.
Provides direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making decisions on health and life styles that affect health.c.
Counsels with students concerning chronic health conditions, mental health issues, problems such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse or any other emotional issue that impedes a students ability to function in the classroom.d.
Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction and as a member of the health curriculum development committees.10.Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison person between the home, school, and community.11.Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers. 12.Provides health counseling for staff.13.Provides leadership and/or support for staff wellness.14.Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.15.Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives for the school district.16.Manages the health office budget making sure that the appropriate medical supplies are on hand and restocked when necessary.
