Job Description

MedStar Health seeks a compassionate Registered Nurse for our Labor & Delivery team on a per diem basis. In this role, you will provide evidence-based care to mothers and newborns through all phases of labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum. You will perform assessments, administer medications, support obstetric procedures, and respond to emergencies while collaborating with physicians, midwives, and support staff. Responsibilities Provide comprehensive nursing care to laboring patients, newborns, and families during labor, delivery, and immediate postpartum. Perform ongoing maternal and fetal assessments, including monitoring vital signs and fetal heart tracings. Administer medications, IV fluids, and blood products in accordance with provider orders and clinical protocols. Assist physicians and midwives with deliveries, obstetric procedures, and emergency interventions. Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record (EHR). Educate patients and families on labor processes, pain management options, breastfeeding, and postpartum care. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate and optimize patient care plans. Maintain a safe environment by following infection control, safety, and regulatory standards. Respond rapidly to obstetric emergencies, including postpartum hemorrhage and fetal distress. Participate in ongoing training, skills development, and quality improvement initiatives within the unit.
