Under limited direction, the Device Clinic Nurse Specialist performs thorough interrogations of pacemakers, ICDs and ILRs with reprogramming in an outpatient/hospital setting or by remote transmission. Assess patient needs to develop and implement adequate education. Skilled in post-procedure incision assessments. In collaboration with physicians and other team members, the Device Clinic Nurse Specialist assists with the plan of care to ensure the best patient care experience for every patient.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Education :

BSN required within 5 years from date of hire (if hired into position after 8/1/2012) License / Certification /

Registration :

Registered Nurse with current licensure in state of Michigan. Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider—required. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider preferred. Must obtain ACLS certification within two months of hire. The imPULSE ECG and Chest Pain competency series to be completed within 12 months of hire.

Experience :

Two (2) years of clinical experience required. Prior experience in a device clinic is strongly preferred.

Skills & Abilities :

In depth knowledge of device technology, principles, and methods and proven ability to perform device checks and reprogramming. Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making within established policies and procedures. Ability and discretion in analyzing data and adequately reporting results. Ability to work effectively as member of health care team. Possess interpersonal skills necessary to interact with people. Ability to organize and interpret data, and accurately communicate with physicians, nurses, other staff and patients. Maintain patient confidentiality.

Essential Duties :

Team members may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. Performs routine and complex device checks and reprograms devices as needed per physician developed protocols and evidence-based practice. Oversees the daily review of home monitoring websites and follows up on routine and potential urgent device issues. Follows physician developed protocols for scheduling cardiology device appointments and assists with the appointment as directed by the attending physician. Assesses the educational needs for patients and their personal caregiver(s) and develops an education plan to address individual need and effectively communicate plans the patient and their personal caregiver(s). Collaborates with the physician in the assessment of the device status to identify and appropriately document how it affects the total treatment plan and patient care. Documents concise, accurate and timely information in the patient care record in accordance with established policies, procedures and applicable laws and regulations that govern them. Maintains updated competency of device and cardiology knowledge and uses standards of care in professional practice Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of use standards of care in professional practice, pursuing self-directed learning, and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
