Job Description

I. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Responsible for performing professional nursing work in the care and treatment of inmate patients. The employee in this position spends a minimum of 75% time performing duties which involve contact with inmates at Stone County Regional Correctional Facility.
II. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES A.
Participates in the screening of inmates for sick call and performs physical assessments. B. Ensures an open-door policy is available to communicate with inmates that are requesting information, either by inmate request or in person. C. Provides treatment and administers medication in non-emergency and chronic illnesses per physician protocols or within the scope of nursing practice. Initiates inmate teaching and provides information regarding type of medication and possible side effects. D. Schedules appointments according to inmates needs or as directed by a physician. E. Responds to the scene of medical emergencies and initiates appropriate treatment and/or medications per physician protocols or within the scope of nursing practice. F. Triages inmates to appropriate health care provider such as hospital base emergency department, physician, dentist and/or psychiatrist. Completes accurate documentation in the inmate's health care record for care provided by entering in a computer or written in inmate's medical file. G. Participates in the maintenance, requisition, and inventories of medications and clinical supplies. H. Supervises inmate orderlies as needed. I. Administers yearly TB Testing to all inmates, correctional officers, contract workers, administrative employees, and county employees. Offers hepatitis vaccinations upon payment to employees, staff, and contract workers. Offers flu vaccinations to the inmate population. J. Participates in continual educational health programs such as: Diabetic, Hepatitis, TB testing, Staph, and Hypertension. K. Collects and labels outgoing laboratory specimens for transportation to proper health authority. L. Participates in continuing education and in-service training to maintain professional capability and proficiency. M. Conducts daily rounds throughout facility, including housing units to pick up sick call requests from designated medical box. On call medical staff will make rounds on weekends and holidays. N. Trains supervisors and supervisor assistants in the distribution of controlled medications. All medications that are distributed at night are prepared by medical staff and locked in control until disbursed to inmate. O. Attends monthly warden calls. P. Performs all duties in accordance with MDOC Policy, Stone County Regional Correctional Facility Policy and Procedure, PREA Standards, and ACA Standards. Q. Performs other related duties as assigned.
III. QUALIFICATIONS
a. Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing b. Licensor as a registered professional nurse in accordance with State Statutes. Please note that this job description is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned as needed.
