CVOR Nurse Manager / Director of Surgical Services Position Summary The CVOR Open Heart Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing specialized perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures, including open-heart surgeries. The RN collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality patient care throughout the surgical experience. Key ResponsibilitiesPreoperative Care Review patient medical records, laboratory results, and diagnostic testing. Conduct preoperative assessments and verify surgical consent. Prepare patients for cardiovascular surgical procedures. Ensure availability and functionality of specialized cardiac surgical equipment and supplies. Participate in surgical time-outs and patient safety protocols. Intraoperative Care Function as a Circulating Nurse and/or Scrub Nurse during cardiovascular procedures.
Assist with open-heart surgeries including:
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Valve Repair and Replacement Aortic Aneurysm Repair Heart Transplant Procedures Minimally Invasive Cardiac Procedures Thoracic and Vascular Surgeries Monitor patient status and maintain a sterile environment. Coordinate communication among surgical team members. Manage surgical instruments, implants, supplies, and equipment. Assist during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. Ensure accurate documentation throughout the surgical procedure. Postoperative Care Facilitate safe patient transfer to ICU, CVICU, or PACU. Provide detailed handoff communication to receiving clinical teams. Complete postoperative documentation and surgical records. Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. Required Clinical Skills Open Heart Surgery Experience CVOR Circulating Experience Scrubbing Experience (preferred or required based on facility) Cardiopulmonary Bypass Procedures Hemodynamic Monitoring Sterile Technique and Aseptic Practices Surgical Instrumentation Knowledge Emergency Response and Crisis Management Blood Product Administration Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) Knowledge Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Familiarity Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other EMR systems Education Requirements Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required. BSN preferred. Licensure Requirements Active Registered Nurse (RN) License in the applicable state. License must be in good standing. Required Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse) CSC (Certified Surgical Cardiovascular Nurse)

Certification Experience Requirements Required Minimum 2 years of recent Operating Room nursing experience. Minimum 1-2 years of recent CVOR/Open Heart experience. Experience circulating in complex cardiovascular procedures. Preferred Scrub experience in open-heart procedures. Experience with Level I Trauma or large academic medical centers. Experience taking call for emergency cardiovascular surgeries. Typical Procedures Performed CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) Valve Repairs and Replacements TAVR Support Procedures Thoracic Aortic Repairs Heart Transplants Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Implantation ECMO Cannulation Support Carotid Endarterectomy Vascular Bypass Procedures Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Manual dexterity for handling surgical instruments and equipment. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity surgical environment.
