A Registered Nurse provides medical care and treatment, educates patients about their conditions, and provides emotional support to patients and families. Works in hospitals, schools, clinics or community health centers. Works under the supervision of a physician or other specialist, and serves as the primary point of care for patients in a hospital setting. May specialize in emergency room work, or treatment for a particular condition, or specialize in working with infants, the elderly or other patient groups. May work as an advanced practice specialists and prescribe medications in addition to offering specialty care.
Job Summary The Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Admission Nurse is responsible for conducting comprehensive psychiatric assessments, facilitating safe and therapeutic admissions, and initiating individualized care plans for adult patients entering the psychiatric unit. This nurse serves as the first clinical point of contact, ensuring timely triage, risk evaluation, and coordination with interdisciplinary teams. Position Qualifications Associate degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's degree in Nursing/BSN preferred
Experience:
1-2 years in psychiatric or emergency nursing preferred
Licensure:
Active RN license
Certifications:
BLS required; CPI or other crisis intervention training preferred Responsibilities Admission Assessment Perform psychiatric and medical evaluations upon patient arrival. Assess mental status, suicide risk, substance use, and psychosocial factors. Document findings in the electronic health record (EHR) Care Coordination Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and other clinicians to determine appropriate level of care. Initiate nursing care plans and communicate patient needs to the treatment team. Ensure continuity of care from admission through transition to assigned unit nurse. Safety & Crisis Management Identify and respond to behavioral emergencies. Implement de-escalation techniques and safety protocols. Monitor for signs of aggression, self-harm, or withdrawal. Patient Advocacy & Education Provide emotional support and education to patients and families. Explain admission procedures, rights, and treatment expectations. Advocate patient needs during the admission process. Compliance & Documentation Ensure all admission documentation meets regulatory and hospital standards. Maintain confidentiality and uphold HIPAA guidelines. Participate in quality improvement and compliance initiatives. Working Conditions Work occurs in a fast-paced psychiatric inpatient setting with patients who may display unpredictable or aggressive behaviors and must use de-escalation skills and follow safety protocols. The role requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, occasional lifting or assisting patients and the ability to respond quickly to emergencies while performing clinical tasks.
