Job Description

University Hospitals is currently accepting applications for our 2027 Summer Nursing Internship Program. The nursing internship is a 10-week, temporary, paid summer position that provides nursing students the opportunity to work with a highly skilled RN preceptor in a supportive learning environment. The program assists the Nursing Intern to improve communication, critical thinking, clinical, and time management skills while increasing self-confidence and clinical competence. The Nurse Intern functions within the registered nurse's scope of practice under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The Nurse Intern provides patient care for individuals and their families, with the goal of assisting individuals in attaining, maintaining, and restoring optimal health. The Nurse Intern implements her/his role through collaboration with the clinical preceptor and/or clinical faculty. Tasks and responsibilities may be restricted further as defined by the needs of the clinical services Patient Care Administration of medications and blood products Verification of blood products Initiation, monitoring or discontinuation of IV's Any IV Pump adjustment including flow rate, clearing pump totals Traction adjustment Baseline, first 15 minute, or post transfusion VS with Blood Administration Pre and Post-Operative Care Management of external ventriculostomy tube Tracheostomy tube change or suctioning Miscellaneous Read or level CVP lines Assess functioning of monitoring equipment Gastric tube insertion or irrigation Initiation of nasogastric tube feeding Suctioning (except for oral care) Administration of oxygen Throat cultures (except in Emergency Department only) Sterile dressings Counting narcotics, accepting delivery of narcotics Independent patient check-ins in pre-op Documentation in circulator role Why choose UH as a Nurse Intern? Work one-on-one with an RN, performing the duties of the professional nurse Increased proficiency in performing assessments, medication administration, documentation, and clinical reasoning Develop time management and organizational skills Improve communication skills with patient/families and care team members Grow in understanding the role of the professional nurse Receive priority job placement upon graduation Education Requirements Enrollment in one of the below qualifying nursing programs: Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Hiram College, Kent State University (and Kent regional campuses), University of Mount Union, University of Akron, John Carroll, and Ursuline College.
