Empower survivors and champion change in our community! Join our team at Partnership to provide advocacy during critical moments and lead efforts to combat sexual violence in Chattanooga. A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a specialized registered nurse who provide trauma informed care to victims of assault. They conduct comprehensive medical-forensic examinations, collect physical evidence, document injuries, and provide critical medical treatments like STI prophylaxis and pregnancy prevention.
Key Responsibilities Forensic Examinations:
Conduct detailed, head-to-toe medical-forensic exams, including ano-genital assessments, while strictly preserving evidence and the legal chain of custody.
Evidence & Documentation:
Carefully collect and package forensic evidence (DNA swabs, clothing, biological samples), document injuries, and take forensic photography.
Patient Care:
Assess for acute injuries, administer prophylactic medications (such as STI treatments and emergency contraception), and provide crisis intervention.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
Partner with law enforcement, victim advocates, social workers, and local prosecution teams.
Legal Testimony:
Serve as a fact or expert witness in subsequent legal and court proceedings regarding findings and evidence collected during the exam.
Requirements & Qualifications Active Licensure:
Valid, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.
Clinical Experience:
1-2 years of clinical experience in fields requiring strong assessment skills (e.g., emergency room, critical care)
Specialized SANE Training:
Successful completion of a formal, didactic SANE training course (often 40+ hours) recognized by the International Association of Forensic Nurses or state boards.
Personal Traits:
Ability to remain calm under high stress, strong clinical judgment, and a firm commitment to trauma-informed, patient-centered advocacy.
