JOB SUMMARY
The registered nurse will act as the pre-operative supervisor in the operative room. He/She is responsible for the direct supervision of the scrub technician. He/She is the patient advocate and assures that quality care is administered.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. Registered nurses approved and employed by the medical staff must have, on file, their license to practice in the state of Washington. 2. Maintain re-licensure requirements. 3. Operating room experience with at least one-year expertise in a surgical specialty or related field. 4. Knowledge of supervision and management. 5. Stable, mature, and dependable. 6. ACLS certified or will obtain. 7. IV trained or will obtain.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Assist director of nursing in improving teaching program for staff members. 2. Review all policies and procedures on a yearly basis. 3. Attend update and continuing education courses relevant to specialty field. 4. Provide safe environment for treating surgical patients from cross infection. 5. Obtain current basic CPR card and maintain ongoing in-service in basic cardiac and respiratory emergencies. 6. Assist in providing in-service for all staff members in the following areas: a. Fire safety with drills b. Infection control c. CPR d. Medical education 7. Assist in cleaning and terming of pre/post-op room, supplies, and equipment. 8. Assist in ordering supplies and equipment. 9. Participate in an on-going quality assurance program. 10. Write legible notes, which reflect care that is pertinent and concise to the patient's status. 11. Communicate effectively, maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Identifies patient by name, BD, identifies correct surgical site with patient and consent. a. Evaluates patient's LOC and baseline vital signs. b. Evaluates ambulatory status. c. Complete patient surgical time out with OR team. d. Assess dilation of op eye (if applicable). e. Assess effectiveness of orbital block. 2. Assists patients to OR bed. 3.
Connect patient to:
a. Applying pulse oximeter. b. Applying blood pressure pulse and cardiac monitors. c. Applying oxygen. 4. Prep surgical eye. 5. Assist technician in draping patient. 6. Set-up phacoemulsification and other equipment, as necessary. 7. Check with physician on type and power of lens to be used in the case of lens implant surgery. 8. Complete written operative report 9. Assist in moving patient to recovery room area 10. Complete patient handoff to recovery nurse 11. Assist in preparing room for subsequent cases, for example, gather necessary supplies to assist surgeon, anesthetist, and OR technician. 12. Restock room at end of day. 13. Other duties as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1.
Visual acuity:
average visual acuity is acceptable. Must be able to use visually oriented medical equipment. i.e., B/P monitor. Must be able to read and administer medication and perform physical assessments. 2.
Auditory acuity:
average acuity acceptable. Must be able to use auditory oriented medical equipment, i.e., stethoscope. Must be able to communicate person-to-person and via telephone. 3.
Partial body mobility:
Must be able to maneuver upper body adequately to lift 1 to 15 lbs. on a regular basis from floor to waist, 1 to 5 lbs. from waist to shoulder and 1 to 5 lbs. from shoulder to overhead. Must be able to push, pull, bend, twist and reach up to 66% of the time.
