Job Description

Job Summary:
A Ward Clerk collaborates with the physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers within a secretarial office function at the hospital and performs the clerical duties for the nursing unit.
Essential Job Duties:
Transcribe and transmit doctor's orders to appropriate area under the supervision of a registered nurse and confers with the charge nurse regarding scheduling patient's activities and tests. Performs clerical functions for physicians within the ward clerk's sphere of responsibility. Answers phone and intercom, takes messages, and communicates messages to the appropriate person. Assists patients and visitors in the nursing unit as needed. Prepares and keeps current census sheets, TPR sheets, dietary requisitions and other forms, and delivers them to the proper department as necessary. Performs clerical duties related to the admission and the discharge of patients. Orders supplies and equipment; receives and places items in their proper storage area. Complies new charts, maintains current charts, and enters patient information on the charts and Kardex. Assists in orientation of new staff to clerical duties of the unit. Cleans areas as assigned. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by cleaning counter tops, reporting equipment that is out of order and reporting other problems to the head nurse. Willingness to keep abreast of new technology and procedures. Ability to understand medical technology. Ability to perform a variety of duties as work schedules change. Ability to prescribe to hospital standards.
Periodic Essential Duties:
May work in a nurse aide capacity as needed
Job Specification:
A minimum of two (2) years of administrative work or medical secretarial work, preferably in a health care organization. Will consider a nurse aide with one year of experience in a hospital setting.
Education/Training:
High School Graduate or GED. Current BLS certification is required.
Skills:
Maintains a high degree of credibility, independence, integrity, confidentiality and trust. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential.
Physical Effort:
Work requires frequent sitting and typing. Work requires occasional walking, stooping/bending, climbing, driving and lifting up to 25 lbs. Works primarily at a desk.
