A Respiratory Therapist assists patients who have trouble breathing because of a chronic respiratory illness, trauma, or other conditions. Administers tests to diagnose breathing problems, performs treatments to help patients breathe easier, or sets up breathing equipment such as ventilators. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare workers, and may also assist in providing emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Works in hospitals; may also provide care and counseling to patients in their homes.

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, administers respiratory care and life support to patients with cardiopulmonary system deficiencies and abnormalities. Trains and acts as a resource for other respiratory department staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establish priorities to organize work and utilize time effectively
  • Assesses patients and recommends respiratory therapy treatments
  • Plans, prepares and administers respiratory therapy treatments, aerosol, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, and sputum inductions, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Performs diagnostic pulmonary and cardiac test and records patient treatment, response, and progress.
  • Inspects, tests, maintains and operates respiratory therapy equipment.
  • Responds to "code blue" calls and assists by maintaining the patient's airway and performing CPR.
  • Attend mandatory meetings
  • Attend appropriate in-service education
  • Comply what the attendance and punctuality policy
  • Maintain courtesy at all times to patients, families, and visitors.
  • Complies with all safety rules applying to gas cylinders, ventilators, and all electrical equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND TRAINING
High School diploma or GED required Completion of an A.S. program from a nationally accredited respiratory therapy school Must be NBRC Registered BLS/CPR certified
MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE
The ability to meet National Board of Respiratory Care requirements State licensure required for worksite state Minimum one year experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is preferred
